On a 4 hour trip last week, and the temperature gauge started spiking periodically (Very fast), which would also generate the "check coolant temp" and "engine overheated" lights to flash. The vehicle never seemed to actually run hot (was running fine). I took it to a local mechanic when we arrived at our destination, and he did not think the vehicle was running hot. He replaced the Thermostat, and flushed the coolant since the vehicle has about 81k on it. The mechanic believes that it is the instrument cluster, and that would need to be fixed by a dealer. A few questions come to mind...is this likely an IPC problem? Does it really need to be done by a dealer? Any others have this issue? Could this be something other than the instrument cluster (none of the other gauges were having issues)?
