It doesn't take long to find a level, straight stretch, set the cruise control, reset the mileage, and record mileage in both directions. Just include the air temperature and a density correction factor and we can then understand what sort of mileage these cars will get in highway travel. Just don't include the acceleration fuel cost that should be handled by other means. 2) Mileage from sprints? You know how to measure 0-60 but we don't get the fuel burn. Just brake at the same acceleration rate; turn around; and repeat five runs in both directions. Drop the highest and lowest and average the three in the middle. Again, report the air temperature and density correction factor and we'll have a clue to the worst-case, city driver performance. 3) Maximum MPG at 25 mph? This seems to be the lower limit for most cruise controls. Just set the speed; reset the mileage; and run for say 30 minutes and again, report the temperature and a correction factor. This approach would give us enough information to understand relative vehicle mileage at three limits: (1) steady state highway cruise, (2) jerky driving city, and (3) the limits of slow speed performance, the rolling drag. There is another approach that would be perfectly fine for me: drag = A*(v**2) + B*(v) + C ## the EPA formula for vehicle drag drag = CdA*(v**2) + Froll ## the classic formula for vehicle drag Either works for me but then I'm probably not the usual car buyer. Replying to: pf_flyer (Jun 15, 2009 2:48 am) So it will be 9:00 PM EDT on Wednesday? What is the protocol? Serious, I haven't used 'chat' in a long time and was wondering if you' all will be using a web based chat system or something else? Was last week's the first one? Was it pretty 'crowded'? Thanks, Bob Wilson

The August 2009 issue of Consumer Reports found the Insight "disappointing despite its 38 mpg overall." Its summary: "It scored too low in our tests for us to recommend it." Highs for the tested vehicle: "Fuel economy, transmission, hatchback versatility." Lows: "Ride, noise, handling, acceleration, rear-seat, access, visibility." |
