It's probably not even the distributor, really. It's probably the Camshaft Position Sensor. Unfortunately you have to replace the entire distributor to replace that sensor. Why do they make parts like this? $300 to replace what probably costs $3 or less to make. All it really is is a couple LEDs, a couple photodiodes and some (probably plastic) wheels. Ever taken apart a computer mouse (the old kind with the ball)? Same technology. I read somewhere that someone's mechanic cleaned their sensor. Anyone know if that's possible? I haven't pulled my dist. yet, but I'm pretty sure that is the problem... having the same symptoms and it's throwing Knock Sensor codes, which are really just caused by the engine misfiring b/c the CPS has 100,000 miles worth of dust on its diodes.

I spent some time reading old posts about this problem as mine is doing the exact same thing. Misfiring, bogging out/surging when going up hill and missing-loosing power moreso when van gets warmer. In reading old posts it seems that the most common problem is the dirty photo whatever under the distributor and most clean that off or change the distributor and that seems to be the remedy to this problem. Mostly from what I have read here in all the old posts. I had the fuel filter changed and that didn't do it. So my next will be the above mentioned.

So I got around to it today and pulled my distributor off and apart. My problem was NOT the camshaft position sensor, but the distributor shaft bearing was throwing shrapnel all around inside there causing erratic readings on the CPS. After the engine would heat up the shaft would start wiggling around due to lack of 3 or 4 balls in the bearing. That threw the timing off so bad the engine would stall. So... I replaced the distributor and problem solved. Oh, and that "un-replaceable" camshaft position sensor. I have a spare now. It comes off with 2 screws. What a racket the parts business is.

Thanks for the posts here. My 1999 Villager was running so poorly and I had replaced distributor cap, spark plugs, wires, and fuel filter to no avail. Finally, as a result of this forum, I forked out the 300 bucks and BINGO, fixed. Thanks a bunch everyone!

I believe you have a bad distributor. The bearing goes bad and produces brown dust whcih coats the camshaft optical sensor in the distributor. To confirm, remove the cap and rotor (1 screw) and the slotted plate. Look for brownn dust. Clean optical sensor. It will work for a short while. Get reman distributor on ebay for $200 or less.

I have a 2000 villager, that needs the front Catalytic Converter replaced. The type thats on it is one that has the manifold as part of the cat. I've looked all over online, so has the muffler shop and no one can find it. All that were finding it a front cat with a connecting pipe that ends with two holes for exhaust flow. Not the manifold cat. I don't know why there are 2 different parts like this. But has anyone else experienced this, is there a manifold part that I can add, so as to be able to use the after market parts that I am finding?

I know this is an older post but perhaps someone now can benefit from this information.
 
I have a 2000 villager that experienced the same issues as mentioned above, after it warmed up it would miss and buck. After a trip to the shop for a diagnostic and a quote of 500 bucks I replaced my self the Cap, wires, rotor, and plugs...no luck! I took it to a Ford dealership and they replaced the air filter telling me that it was a Mass airflow sensor, however they were unable to pull diagnostic codes because it has a Nissan Engine.
 
I tore the distributer apart and the Upper distributor shaft ball bearing was missing the ball shield and 4 balls, I suspect they are sitting on top of the Lower ball bearing that is still intact. Not causing any harm....
 
For 21 dollars I bought a new Bearing 10mm ID, 26 mm OD, 8mm thick, and installed it without ever removing the distributor...a little tricky but it worked great. Sure beats forking out several hundred for a new or rebuilt distributor.

Are the parts for the Mercury villager 2000 v6 3.3L interchangeable with the Nissan Quest? Like the catylictic convertor?

Should be - they are twins and just some of the trim and cosmetic bits should be different.
 
Try searching for parts at RockAuto.com and see if the part numbers are any different.

Yes they are the same. They are pricey but Davico has the least expensive and they are made as exact fit items
