we heard a grinding by the back tire of 1998 s-10 blazer last night, took off tire and rotor and a ring fell off of the axle , like the size of a small paper plate, what is ths thing?

Could it be the drum portion of the rotor, where the parking brake shoes contact? That rotor also has a drum for the parking brake, and it isn't supposed to be separate. Could we be looking at an extreme rust issue? Go to this link,

and see if your rotor looks like this on the inside. I suspect your ring is the drum part of the rotor that separated! Thanks to O'Reillys Auto parts for a good picture of the drum/rotor. Down here in Texas they sell for about $43, and should be replaced in pairs.
