A battery that is three years old is past its effective life span. The battery manufacturers determine the effective service life of their batteries and then double it for the warranty period. For example, a 60 month battery should effectively last 30 months. That way the battery manufacturers can keep you coming back to get a pro-rated replacement battery on their warranty and will keep you hooked on their batteries. I went through that merry go round 30 years ago with DIE HARD batteries. I finally jumped off that merry go round and switched to AC Delco 60 month batteries. At least an AC Delco battery is a GM product and matches the make of my car. About 1995, after AC Delco batteries started being made in Mexico, they had problems with acid leaking out of the terminals. GM sent some inspectors to Mexico to supervise the assembly of those batteries and solved that problem by 1998. Be advised, a weak battery can go down overnight (depending on how weak it is) on modern computer controlled cars. That is called "parasitic battery drain" and is caused by sensors, relays, a radio, a digital clock, the engine computer, etc. Even a new 60 month battery will eventually be dead after a month or two if you don't drive the car to keep the battery charged. The average parasitic battery drain for a modern computer controlled vehicle is from 10 to as high as 50 ma. I had a Autolite 36 month battery on my 1991 S10 Blazer 4x4 and after the battery was on the car for 18 months, a unknown battery drain made the battery go completely dead after four days without driving the car to keep the battery charged. I found the culprit that caused the battery drain and it was a shorted power door lock relay. I replaced the relay and installed a AC Delco 60 month battery and I have had no more problems. After a battery goes completely dead for any reason, it needs to be replaced. |
