The BMW X3 is the only one rated 2 mpg better highway than the Volvo XC60 but, as you pointed out, it's smaller than the XC60. In my opinion, the X3 is also cheaply made, especially given its high price. A vehicle you forgot to mention is the 3.5 L V6 AWD Toyota Venza -- the sister of the Lexus RX350. It's rated at 25 mpg highway. Its HP/torque (268/245) are less than those of the AWD Volvo XC60 (281/295), but the Venza (4045 pounds) is also lighter than the XC60 (4225 pounds). Both have their pro's and con's. The safety features on the XC60 are unsurpassed, it feels more solid, and Volvo is a more "luxury" brand than Toyota. But the Venza also has its advantages (mileage, very roomy rear seat, etc.). Both the Volvo XC60 and Toyota Venza are on my "short" list. Cheers. |

In reality, it is unlikely that one would take either vehicle off-road to any extent. You used the Buick Enclave, Ford Edge, Lincoln MKX, and Lexus RX350 in your post (#35). The Toyota Venza is a poor cousin to the Lexus RX350. And ALL of these are generally referred to as CUV's. In the AWD V6 version, the Venza clearly has the best EPA mileage estimate (25 mpg). And, yes, I'm looking at the XC60 3.2L FWD. 27 mpg highway is very good for that class of vehicle. Cheers. |

Replying to: volvomax (Aug 14, 2009 4:38 pm) Another question, max, if I may. Is it normal that the liftgate can only be closed manually if the vehicle moves ANY while the hatch is open? This has happened three times that I've let the vehicle move as little as a couple of feet while the hatch is open...then no amount of electronic coaxing can move the hatch...it must be closed manually. BTW, major PITA that the hatch closes ONLY with the button on the liftgate itself rather than on the key fob or dash.(see Lexus on this one!)

There have been few actual "price paid and buying experience" posts on this thread in the last couple months. To date, I have seen just once an XC60 on the road (I live in SoCal). It makes me wonder how well (or poor) has XC60 been selling. Blame it on economy?

At 2,000 rpm the turbo is turning pretty well into the boost range. At highway speeds you don't want to have to WAIT for the boost to come up for passing, so the engine turns more rpm's. The V8 turns Regarding the hatch, i didn't know that but I am not surprised. No doubt the system has some sort of reset function to prevent that hatch from being inadvertanly opened if the car is moving. The remote is disabled if the car is underway. I agree that you should be able to open AND close the hatch from the remote. |

Replying to: jtla (Aug 16, 2009 4:07 pm) It's driving me nuts right now. I need some base XC60's. At $33,000 they are a helluva good deal. Volvo closed the factories down twice this year. Once in Feb and again at the end of June. Factories just reopened a couple weeks ago. We'd sell more if we had them.

I have been looking at the car at three dealers in PA, NJ and NY. So far the best price they can offer is the invoice - $1000 (current market support). How far can I go below this price? Thanks, |
