The 3.2L FWD version is now available by yurko

The 2010 Volvo XC60 has gotten very good reviews overall in the mass media and, IMHO, is impressive. One negative is the so-so mileage on the original 3.0L turbo AWD version (16 city/22 highway). The cheaper 3.2L FWD version -- advertised on TV -- is now available. Its EPA figures look pretty decent: 18 city/27 highway. Our local dealer (South Florida) has a few 3.2L FWD XC60's in stock. He told me that the 3.2L will also be available in AWD in the future, but didn't know when or what the EPA figures would be. I'm in the market for a new vehicle and look forward to test drives.

We have over 6K miles on our XC60 and the average mileage is not as bad as we thought, given the amount of in-townish, 0-60mph type driving we have here in Austin. We also have been over 100 degrees almost every day since May...so, A/C is virtually non-stop. Still averaging close to 19mpg overall. I'm a little disappointed that we can't get a little better highway mileage...70mph yields only 21-22mpg while our XC70 could get well into the upper 20s on the highway. On the other hand, the power is impressive, especially 30-60mph acceleration for merging/passing...zippy, to say the least.

We embark on a 3000 mile trek starting tomorrow...should see plenty of rain in the Southeast and enjoy the twisties of the mountains in western North Carolina Doesn't hurt that petrol is $1.50/gal LESS than last summer!!! Adios!

XC60 is a different car from the XC70. XC60 is taller. Taller cars get worse mpg at highway speeds. The air can't get out of the way as quickly as it can on a car lower to the ground. Also, the XC60 has a much more powerful engine.">link title

Hi, volvomax.

Are you perhaps confusing the original 3.0L T6 AWD version of the XC60 with the upcoming 3.2L AWD version? The EPA city/highway figures for the 3.0L T6 AWD version are indeed 16/22, but I haven't seen any figures for the 3.2L AWD version. Nor has my local dealer. Given that the figures for the newly-released 3.2L FWD version are 18/27, I would think that the figures for the upcoming 3.2L AWD version would be closer to 18/27 than to 16/22.

No, the 3.2 AWD gets the same mileage as the T6 AWD.

Sorry, but you're incorrect. The EPA figures for the 2010 XC60 3.2L AWD are not yet on the government website -- I just looked it up (again). Only the 3.0L T6 AWD is listed there.

How are fuel cost estimates and miles on a tank determined?
Fuel cost estimates are based on 45% highway driving, 55% city driving, 15000 annual miles and a fuel cost of $ 2.44 per gallon . You may customize these values to reflect the cost of fuel in your area and your own driving patterns.

Fill-up cost and the distance you can travel on a tank are calculated based on the combined MPG and the assumption that you will re-fuel when your tank is 10% full.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What's the difference between air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions?
The Air Pollution score and Carbon Footprint measure different types of vehicle emissions. Air pollutants harm human health and/or cause smog. Carbon Footprint measures greenhouse gas emissions (primarily CO2) that impact climate change.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why do some vehicles have more than one air pollution score?
Some vehicles are available in multiple emission versions that look the same but have different air pollution scores. Unfortunately, it is difficult to distinguish between similar models.

If you click on the link "Show Detailed Air Pollution Information" above, it will display the emission standard and the 12-digit underhood engine ID. You can identify the cleaner car by matching the engine ID listed above to the Underhood Label Identification Number on the vehicle.

Note: In some cases, manufacturers choose to certify identical vehicles to different emission standards. In these cases, the vehicles will have the same engine ID.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The carbon footprint measures greenhouse gas emissions expressed in CO2 equivalents. The estimates presented here are "full fuel-cycle estimates" and include the three major greenhouse gases emitted by motor vehicles: carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane. Full fuel-cycle estimates consider all steps in the use of a fuel, from production and refining to distribution and final use. Vehicle manufacture is excluded. Max, thanks for the physics lesson In the real world, there are bigger SUVs than the 60 that get better than 22hwy. I might have thought with the 6-speed, they could have found a few more mpg in top gear. I'm betting 70mph 2200RPM could be dropped to ~2K RPM--mayhaps saving a drop or two.

We've gone the first 1100 miles of our trip in the last few days. I was sorely disappointed in the sputtering I experienced while driving in the rain(not much of that in TX nowadays). Twice, while accelerating onto the highway, the vehicle sputtered and choked like my old TR-6 with bad plug wires. As I settled into highway speeds, the engine seemed to run fine...but getting on the 70mph highway was an eye-opener!

Also, the 'blis' gives plenty of false 'info' when it rains...just the time it might come in handy.

Really? With 281 hp engines? Not likley.
I went and looked at the fueleconomy website and here is what I found:
All AWD SUV's all with the smallest engine available in an AWD.
Acura RDX 22, MDX 20, Audi Q5 23,Q7 20, BMW X3 24, X5 21, Buick Enclave 22, Caddy SRX 22, Ford Edge 22, Infiniti FX35 21, Lexus RX350 22, Lincoln MKX 22, Nissan Murano 23, SAAB 97-X 20, Toyota Highlander 23.

So, the BEST car is the smaller X3 and it's only 2MPG better. Seems like the XC60 T6 is in pretty good company.
