Sorry, but you're incorrect. The EPA figures for the 2010 XC60 3.2L AWD are not yet on the government website -- I just looked it up (again). Only the 3.0L T6 AWD is listed there.

How are fuel cost estimates and miles on a tank determined?
Fuel cost estimates are based on 45% highway driving, 55% city driving, 15000 annual miles and a fuel cost of $ 2.44 per gallon . You may customize these values to reflect the cost of fuel in your area and your own driving patterns.

Fill-up cost and the distance you can travel on a tank are calculated based on the combined MPG and the assumption that you will re-fuel when your tank is 10% full.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What's the difference between air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions?
The Air Pollution score and Carbon Footprint measure different types of vehicle emissions. Air pollutants harm human health and/or cause smog. Carbon Footprint measures greenhouse gas emissions (primarily CO2) that impact climate change.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why do some vehicles have more than one air pollution score?
Some vehicles are available in multiple emission versions that look the same but have different air pollution scores. Unfortunately, it is difficult to distinguish between similar models.

If you click on the link "Show Detailed Air Pollution Information" above, it will display the emission standard and the 12-digit underhood engine ID. You can identify the cleaner car by matching the engine ID listed above to the Underhood Label Identification Number on the vehicle.

Note: In some cases, manufacturers choose to certify identical vehicles to different emission standards. In these cases, the vehicles will have the same engine ID.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The carbon footprint measures greenhouse gas emissions expressed in CO2 equivalents. The estimates presented here are "full fuel-cycle estimates" and include the three major greenhouse gases emitted by motor vehicles: carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane. Full fuel-cycle estimates consider all steps in the use of a fuel, from production and refining to distribution and final use. Vehicle manufacture is excluded. Max, thanks for the physics lesson In the real world, there are bigger SUVs than the 60 that get better than 22hwy. I might have thought with the 6-speed, they could have found a few more mpg in top gear. I'm betting 70mph 2200RPM could be dropped to ~2K RPM--mayhaps saving a drop or two.

We've gone the first 1100 miles of our trip in the last few days. I was sorely disappointed in the sputtering I experienced while driving in the rain(not much of that in TX nowadays). Twice, while accelerating onto the highway, the vehicle sputtered and choked like my old TR-6 with bad plug wires. As I settled into highway speeds, the engine seemed to run fine...but getting on the 70mph highway was an eye-opener!

Also, the 'blis' gives plenty of false 'info' when it rains...just the time it might come in handy.

Really? With 281 hp engines? Not likley.
I went and looked at the fueleconomy website and here is what I found:
All AWD SUV's all with the smallest engine available in an AWD.
Acura RDX 22, MDX 20, Audi Q5 23,Q7 20, BMW X3 24, X5 21, Buick Enclave 22, Caddy SRX 22, Ford Edge 22, Infiniti FX35 21, Lexus RX350 22, Lincoln MKX 22, Nissan Murano 23, SAAB 97-X 20, Toyota Highlander 23.

So, the BEST car is the smaller X3 and it's only 2MPG better. Seems like the XC60 T6 is in pretty good company.

Hi, volvomax. I suspect you're a Volvo fan. I am as well and own an XC90, which I love. I'm looking at various vehicles to replace my Honda Pilot.

With respect to mileage figures, your list included AWD vehicles in various price and "prestige" levels -- from Ford to BMW, etc. As you pointed out, the estimated highway mpg figures are close for all the vehicles in your list. The BMW X3 is the only one rated 2 mpg better highway than the Volvo XC60 but, as you pointed out, it's smaller than the XC60. In my opinion, the X3 is also cheaply made, especially given its high price.

A vehicle you forgot to mention is the 3.5 L V6 AWD Toyota Venza -- the sister of the Lexus RX350. It's rated at 25 mpg highway. Its HP/torque (268/245) are less than those of the AWD Volvo XC60 (281/295), but the Venza (4045 pounds) is also lighter than the XC60 (4225 pounds). Both have their pro's and con's. The safety features on the XC60 are unsurpassed, it feels more solid, and Volvo is a more "luxury" brand than Toyota. But the Venza also has its advantages (mileage, very roomy rear seat, etc.). Both the Volvo XC60 and Toyota Venza are on my "short" list.

Cheers.

When comparing gas mileage you have to compare vehicles of similar size and ability. The Venza is really a station wagon, it isn't a crossover and can't really do the off road thing.
Also, the OP insisted that there were larger SUV's that got better mileage than the XC60 and I think I proved that there really aren't any.
Finally, if you don't need AWD OR a 281 hp engine, Volvo recently introduced the XC60 3.2 FWD. 27 mpg highway!

Hi, volvo max.

You're correct that one should "compare vehicles of similar size and ability", but vehicles are rarely similar in overall size AND interior room AND engine/transmission/drivetrain characteristics, etc. The Venza has more passenger room ("size") than the XC60, while the AWD XC60 is more off-road capable ("ability") than the AWD Venza. In reality, it is unlikely that one would take either vehicle off-road to any extent.

You used the Buick Enclave, Ford Edge, Lincoln MKX, and Lexus RX350 in your post (#35). The Toyota Venza is a poor cousin to the Lexus RX350. And ALL of these are generally referred to as CUV's. In the AWD V6 version, the Venza clearly has the best EPA mileage estimate (25 mpg).

And, yes, I'm looking at the XC60 3.2L FWD. 27 mpg highway is very good for that class of vehicle.

Cheers.

Call me crazy but just because the 281 hp are available, does that really mean the vehicle can get only 22mpg? I should think the XC60 could lumber along at 2K rpm at 70mph and pick up ~10% in highway mileage. How much is the turbo working at that speed? Seems like they could change the final ratio and improve the highway numbers or is the turbo actually needed to sustain highway cruising speed?

Another question, max, if I may. Is it normal that the liftgate can only be closed manually if the vehicle moves ANY while the hatch is open? This has happened three times that I've let the vehicle move as little as a couple of feet while the hatch is open...then no amount of electronic coaxing can move the hatch...it must be closed manually. BTW, major PITA that the hatch closes ONLY with the button on the liftgate itself rather than on the key fob or dash.(see Lexus on this one!)

How is XC60 selling? by jtla

There have been few actual "price paid and buying experience" posts on this thread in the last couple months. To date, I have seen just once an XC60 on the road (I live in SoCal). It makes me wonder how well (or poor) has XC60 been selling. Blame it on economy?

Well, you have 2 spearate issues. 1 is the weight and drag of the AWD system. 2 is the turbo's effect on fuel efficency. At 2,000 rpm the turbo is turning pretty well into the boost range. At highway speeds you don't want to have to WAIT for the boost to come up for passing, so the engine turns more rpm's. The V8 turns 1800 rpm's at 70 mph for example. Givdn the right circumstances, you should be able to get better than 22 mpg highway. But it would need to be on a level surface where you aren't varying speed and there isn't a headwind. Best I ever did in the XC90 V8 70 mph was 25mpg. That was on the test track.

Regarding the hatch, i didn't know that but I am not surprised. No doubt the system has some sort of reset function to prevent that hatch from being inadvertanly opened if the car is moving. The remote is disabled if the car is underway. I agree that you should be able to open AND close the hatch from the remote.
