When we last left the 2009 Nissan 370Z, it had just laid a drubbing on BMW's little 135i. We then proclaimed, "The 2009 Nissan 370Z raises the standard for the sport coupe segment to a new level of affordable excellence."

Should of had a V8 by intothewest

As the owner of a 2006 Mustang - and a car fanatic that owned many Japanese cars (the last a 2002 WRX), and growing-up hating Fox-platform 'Stangs - I'd still pick the Mustang for 2010...as nice as the 370Z appears to be.

The review finishes by re-criticizing the Mustangs brakes ("feel" I'm guessing, since it stopped quicker), steering, and shifter - but failed to mention again the harsh sounds of the VQ.

Sorry, but that's what separates the Mustang. The V8. The way it delivers, and most important, the way it sounds.

For the 7-8/10th's driving most of us do in the real-world, I'd rather have a car that sounds great than one that manages "72-mph slalom" speeds (vs a paltry 68-mph), or "only" .91g on a skidpad vs .94g (I can just see owners testing this in the Wal-mart parking lot).

If you're into auto-crossing, I can understand your conclusion. Just bring ear-plugs.

OK, let's have Mustang or Z vs. Genesis (as long as we're going with a 2-seater vs. a 2+2). Throw in an RX-8 for fun.

Jason,

I wouldn't exactly say the 370Z put a "drubbing" on the 135i, unless almost identical performance results in every test, with the Z edging on style and the 135i better on overall MPG, is what you would define as a "drubbing".

(edit: actually, the Z probably does have better overall MPG, I must have been thinking highway numbers for the 135i....still a close test comparison though!)

At first I was wondering if it was accurate to call the Z a legend, then I remembered the Datsun Fairlady. Point Datsun!

The way it sounds? You've got to be joking... They may not as well do performance car comparison reviews. Edumunds can just have automakers send in audio samples of their cars for comparisons from now on. Genius...

Don't kid yourself - the way a sports car engine sounds can be a big influence on purchase decision for some buyers. I'm one for example. I own an '02 Z06 with aftermarket Corsa Indy exhaust and long tube headers, and I LOVE the sound of my car. I love Vipers too, but the V-10 in those cars sounds so flat and crappy (like a UPS truck on steroids, or a Hoover having sex with a tuba), that I don't think I would ever own one because of it. Even if the Viper is faster.

Anyway, back to the topic: I would buy the Mustang if it were my only car, because it is much more practical. I would get the 370Z if I had a daily driver to go with it.

I would also have to go w/ the new 2010 Stang. I just don't like to feel like I'm driving in a bath tub. What I'm referring to is the high belt line of the Z. I have better control & avoidance when I sit a little high in the saddle. This goes with a sedan, coupe, or convertible. I miss my 1993 5.0 LX and looked at getting another Stang in 06. Interior and amenities just didn't do it for me. Hence my 06 Passat VR6 4Motion w/ Sports Pack #2 Ride that still puts a smile on my face; when the feeling hits. May have to give the 2010 convertible a test run as the interior has been upgraded per all of the mag & web writings. Who knows? Better yet - Maybe an affordable Terlingua Stang is in Ford's Racing/SVT division as well as mine. Sorry Z fans, I'm afraid this would be a slam dunk. Bang for buck muscle and world class road handling sport combo may be round the corner.

z fan here but like the new mustang more by alman08

i have always been a z fan but after reading much about the 10 mustang and seeing it in person, i now like mustang more and more, especially in the convt form.
i notice many car manufactures are now using diff size tires front vs. back on their sport cars, but really, would that make a car handle that much better on daily use? I personally wouldn't know because the only time I took a car to a race track was on my 93 MR2 Turbo. But not being able to rotate the tires on a car would be a disadvantage to me. I have a 02 ford explorer and the first set of tires last me 90k miles having them rotated at every 5000k miles oil change.
the interior seemed to be a much improvement on the 10 model over the 09. I remember comparing the 350z with the 08 mustang's interior at the car show, and i was thinking, "why would anyone spent this kind of money on a car with this kind of crappy plastic on the interior" about the mustang. although the Z was all plastic also, it was a better quality plastic.
now if i can get a GT premium convt at $500 under invoice...

Yes; different front and back tire sizes do make a difference. This can also be said of the tires that need to stay on the same side. 90K on one set of tires is amazing. Best I've gotten was around high 60's w/ a set of Yokohama's on a light Impreza. Sold the car with them on it and got the price I wanted. Tires really make a car ride and handle. Kind of important and depends on your geographical location (rain/winter/road conditions) and the suspension/damping setup of your ride. A taunt suspension ride can be softened by increasing sidewall height for bad road condition driving (winter states) is an example. Thinking your 02 Explorer was right around the time of their big Firestone recall. I've always liked Firestone. Good tire for a reasonable buck. Think replacements were Goodyear. Buying a new car is a great experience. You should be able to locate your Stang of choice for the price you want. Good Luck!!

my 02 was after the big firestone recall you mentioned. the OEM were michelin, and now i have a set of hankook on the car, which are very good too.
about the stang... have yet to find a dealer that would do under invoice on new stangs especially a convt. it doesn't bother me though because even though this isn't a brand new remade-from-ground-up model, i might be able to get one that's made later this year that wouldn't have much of the new car glitches on it.
