Well, no.
The IS is RWD and built on the same platform as the GS. You'll find that the suspension, even in base 250 form is more taught than the ES. The ES is FWD and used to be based on the Camry. I have no idea if it still is.
Having had both IS and ES loaners when my IS300 was being serviced from time to time, I can tell you there is a world of difference in feel, fit and drive. The ES is your father's Buick - capable, comfortable, compliant, but not inspiring. The IS is more at your father's Pontiac - closer, more planted, still smooth, but no real sports car.
What's your aim in looking at these two? What are you leaving, and why?

I'd also add the difference is whether or not you want to use the rear seat. Do you regularly carry passengers? My 16 year old daughter couldn't get into the back seat of the IS; can't imagine putting adults back there.
ES has a lot of room.
