2009 Ford Focus RS First Drive - First Impressions: A brilliant car that rivals the Mitsubishi Evo and Subaru WRX STI.(more)

Sitting beside the Monte Carlo harbor in the light of early morning is the 2009 Ford Focus RS, one of Europe's most eagerly anticipated cars. Yes, there is a place on the planet where Fords are eagerly anticipated, and it's because Rally Sport is a label that means a great deal to people on the far side of the Atlantic. For the first time in six years, Ford of Britain is putting an RS badge on one of its cars, and every detail of the Focus RS has been minutely analyzed by die-hard enthusiasts ever since the car was officially unveiled at the British Motor Show in London last summer. 2009 Ford Focus RS First Drive |

Last time I checked there was a car that started at about 36,000 dollars, with a 300hp engine... oh wait the volvo s60r which had all wheel drive and ran faster than this focus. I'm just not impressed by this badge engineering. Get a new engine Ford, this is why American car companies are in the toilet. I'm all for recycling...but this is excessive.

| After years of giving us uninspired garbage, Ford finally creates a vehicle that motivates me to grab my wallet...but wait, what's that you say, not available in the US? Expletives without being accompanied by thrown objects can't convey my rage. I have residual love for Ford--at least in concept. My first car was a Ford ('82 Escort--a true legend in the heart of any afficionado). I own an F-350 diesel. But, I've driven a mustang and consequently considered expatriation. Edmunds's comparo said the STI beat it in something like 48 out of 50 tests, the only domestic victories being dubious items such as cup holders capable of holding a king can of Schlitz. NOTE to FoMoCo: fire your design chiefs, the sycophants who agree with them, and anyone who stands as an impediment to importing your Continental cousin's superior hot hatch. Not all Americans are as stupid as your marketing dept thinks we are. Let's see, a cost effective performance car being offered at a time when budgets are tight and sales are in the tubes...hmm, let's instead just put a bigger motor in a heavier-than-USS Reagan Pus-tang, give it more horsepower and continue our legacy of excelling at mediocrity. | |
I always laugh at how people act surprised about us not getting cool cars from acrossed the pond. And when we do get a version of something that they do sell it is usually a watered down piece of junk. The current U.S. spec Focus is the perfect example of an uninspired car for the plebian masses. The 1st gen Focus sold better because it was fun. Fun to look at and fun to drive (frequently to the dealer for ANOTHER recall in it's early years, but that another story). The BIG 3 really need to assess their priorities in bringing us cars that will excite us and serve us well.

| Its nice, but for $36k I'd expect AWD. That at least would make that 0-60 time of 5.9 come down quite a bit. 301hp going into the front wheels of a light car just doesn't work. Proof - the Chevy Impala SS is a much heavier FWD car, has 303hp and beats this thing to 60. | |

Hey guys I just found that AutoCar interviewed Jost Capito, the new head of Ford's global performance division. Capito and his team of bean counters reckon the whole exercise of homologating the RS for North American consumption would be too pricey to bear. This is not only dissapointing but also insulting, what are you trying to say that we are cheap!, I really think that we should stop buying ford cars and trucks to teach them a lesson to a point that they would have to sell the company to some other company with the guts and respect for our united states community. We are American Citizens and we have the right to purchase a Ford Focus RS without the need of import it. PS: Jost Capito, I think is time for you to resign and give somebody with guts the chance to bring a real ford vehicle to United States. |
