Synthetic Oil and Oil Viscosity by Quickbeam

I have read a little bit about synthetic oil and different viscosity, but thought it might be better to get a discussion going under one thread.

I will be buying a new 2009 Mazda 5 in a couple of months and am considering using synthetic oil. I was wondering first of all what might be the plus' and minus' (if any) to using synthetic?

I was also wondering what viscosity should be used? I read somewhere that the Mazda 5 manual suggests using 5 - 20 but I also read that 5 - 30 would be better. Should let you know that I live in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. We can get some snow and cold in the winters, but generally speaking the climate is a mild one.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

There is a discussion devoted to synthetic oil in the Maintenance & Repair Forum. You'll find a lot of information and opinions there.
