Comparison Test: 2010 Honda Insight vs. 2009 Toyota Prius - You might remember the original Honda Insight. When introduced in 1999, it was the first hybrid vehicle sold in the U.S.A., an affordable technical tour de force that achieved spectacular fuel economy by adding a battery-assisted electric motor to the powertrain. But as a diminutive two-seater, it certainly wasn't a car for the masses. (more)

I honestly believe the Insight looks like a cheap, poorly made vehicle, and someone can get nearly as good mileage with a mild hybrid or non-hybrid vehicle, and save tons of money in the process.

Let me say upfront, I'm looking at a Prius and am not a fan of the Insight.

However I think your comments are indeed obviously biased (as are the other posters). This forum isn't about comparing the Insight to a Corolla. This particular forum really is about the Prius and the Insight. In any configuration you are looking at the Insight is always cheaper.

The Insight is about as cheap as anything on the market, so I'm not sure how you save a ton of money even comparing it to a Corolla. And with your logic, I'm not sure why you wouldn't be looking at a manual stripped Corolla rather than a Prius. If that suits your needs then yes a $16,000 Corolla would save you a ton of money over a nice $30,000 Prius.

If car buying was all about saving money there would not be a lot of cars in the market.

Since when this happend? Do you have some proof that they got the letter? It is BS. I tried to buy a Honda Fit, and I saw at least 3 dealers, they all want 2K+ over MSRP, some even want more than 3K. I told them I will complain to Honda, they said be my guest and complain..

They simply said, there is demand, we will sell it price we want, for some other cars they are selling almost at invoice.

Simply, this is demand and supply, and neither Honda or Toyota is doing anything to do stop this robbery by these dealers(atleast in seattle area that is case for both Honda and Toyota dealers).

Which to buy--Fit or Insight?

For Fit versus Civic, I liked the hatchback configuration of the Fit with significantly more cargo capacity.

I bought the 2009 Fit, at MSRP, in September because the Insight wasn't yet available and the Fit seemed to have everything I wanted at a significantly cheaper price than the Insight was expected to cost. I have not had the least regret as I have found out more about the Insight. I would, of course, like the higher gas mileage of the Insight--and it is a little more environmentally friendly--but the extra cargo space of the Fit was a big selling point for me. My bike will fit inside even with the front wheel on. I've hauled a large electric stove in the back with the seats down and am sure one couldn't do that in the Insight. The Fit is also just fun to drive. I'm getting 35 mpg in suburan driving. The Insight would certainly do better but I only expect to drive less than 4000 miles per year so the little extra just didn't seem worth it. I also didn't like the lower to the ground cockpit feel of the Prius and the poor visability through the back. I expect the Insight would have a similar feel and rearward visability based on its style although I haven't yet tried it.

Hope this is helpful.

The above link you posted on is where you Prius owners or wannabe's should be. Besides, this is the Honda forum if you failed to read the forum heading you are on. Edmunds also has a Prius forum as well.

What interest would you have in PriusChat? A closet Prius wannabe???

Actually I can read. It's a requirement for Prius wannabe's. The thread is called:

2010 Honda Insight vs. 2009 Toyota Prius

It shows up in both the Prius and Insight threads since it is a double topic.

It amazes me though that you obviously think you read the thread correctly and yet no where does it say it is to compare the Insight to the Fit which is where you Honda guys have directed it. I understand that though because I doubt that anyone is posting on the Honda threads they just want to debate with the Toyota people so they can argue

This has been a joke of a thread all along, but I still find myself looking when I see a new post. Bottom line is I'm not interested in an Insight or the 09 Prius. Wouldn't own either one of them. I am interested in the 2010 Prius though.

I would think with your vast experience in the forums (what is it now 1 month you've been here) you would take some time to read the topics, especially before you throw that up in my face. But don't worry about being embarrased no one really knows who you are. I'll try to ignore your comments here on out. I really have not seen any Toyota people on here for some time anyway so we'll just leave it to you guys to convince yourselves you made the right decision.

As with the other poster a few days ago on here, I won't be back to respond to you either. Enjoy your Insight / Fit / Civic or what ever you end up with.

I test drove the Prius 2009 , 2010¸and the Insight 2010

The Prius 2010 comes with a modern look but according to Car and Driver the Stability control system is more agressive than the 2009 and it is no good in the snow. I have personnaly done 22,000K with a Prius 2008 and I know what it means
when your engine stops on an Icy hill. The 2010 electric motor is smaller and this condition makes that the stability control worst in Winter driving .

The Insight 2010 comes not close to the Prius 2009 in term of driving and reliability
so I am sitcking with a 2009 Prius and the best sets of Winter Tires to prevent any slipping in our Canadian Winter.

"driving and reliability " ???

No one knows about the reliability of the Insight at this time. Your comment about it should not be considered legit because of the early stag of the new model Honda.

Driving part of your comment has been disputed as well from some tested reviews. The reviews consider the driving part to be better on the Insight opposed to the Prius if you bother to read up on them and not make a dumb statement like you did

No, that's backwards. The 2010 Prius has a less aggressive system and the electric motor is larger. Winter driving will clearly be better. I can feel the improvement in my 2010 over my 2004 already, just by difference from aggressive acceleration in summer conditions. So, it's a matter of "how much" not "if" with the respect to better traction on snowy roads.
