#1 of 3 Check Engine Light Problems
by rgreenspan

I recently took my car into the dealer for State & Emission Inspection and also had the "check engine light" which has been on for two months now. The dealer told me that the car's Battery was the cause of the light and replaced the battery, then reset the Check Engine light.
The dealer then proceeded to drive the car on the highway for at least 10 miles (so i am told) to rebuild the codes necessary to run an emission test. During the drive the car's check engine light came on again. If that is in fact a true statement.
This time the codes revealed I had a leaking valve. Apparently a cannister which is one of 4 in the car that collect Gas fumes was defective and was leaking and causing this light to come on.
The dealer ordered the part for me since they cannot pass emission test with the light on and cannot turn of the light until the cannister is replaced.
However, when i picked up the car and drove it 1-2 miles the check engine light went off and has not been on since. I also noticed that the car was not driven far enough to reset the codes since the car was only driven about 6 miles not the 10 highway miles the dealer told me it was driven. The dealer is at least 3-4 miles from the highway in each direction. It never made it to the highway to record the proper codes.
Now, if the Check Engine light remains off does that mean everything is good and I do not need the leaky valve or cannister replaced?
Also will a bad battery cause the check engine light to come on?
The dealer tells me a lot of things can cause the Check engine light to come on and the battery is one of them. I am supposed to return to the dealer in a week to replace the leaky valve.
