My 2001 needs a heater core replacement(leaks bad) I replaced it 2yrs ago and it's rotted out again. Is there a certain anti-freeze to use to prevent corrosion? I also am considering useing distilled water for 50/50 blend. Any thoughts???

My sister and I both had 96 GMs, and we both had to replace the heater core. But we never had to replace it again. We just used the "pre-mix" anti-freeze. I don't know why you would have gotten a bad core. Does it have the stock thermostat? Maybe a higher thermostat could decrease the heater core lifespan? I'm grasping at straws, but I don't think your replacement heater core should have failed after 2 years.

The air bag light is flashing 5 times then 1 time. What does this mean?

1993 Mercury with 120K miles has poor acceleration [sputters] at take off for the first 1/2 mile then smooths out. Also sluggish after warmed up at start up on hot days >85 degree. The check engine light comes on intermittently after engine is warmed and on a load. I have changed the fuel filter, EGR valve, plugs and wires, air temp sensor, water temp sensor with no improvement. What could be the problem?

Adjacent to the air filter is a sensor. I believe it is called "Mass Airflow Sensor". It can be cleaned, but if you're going to keep the car, change it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I cleaned the Mass Airflow Sensor with electronic connection cleaner and it corrected the problem.
thanks euphonium
