Techno geeks and fuel thrifty car buyers may now rejoice...Honda has done it! There is officially a hybrid that first time buyers can put on their shopping list, and not to mention another alternative to the seriously overrated (and overpriced) Toyota Prius. Furthermore, the Insight appears to have a more fun to drive nature than the Prius. No, its not a sport sedan by any stretch of the imagination but it is more involving. The Prius seems more devoted to being isolated from the road, which is probably what its buyers are asking for anyway. Insight buyers are likely to be that of a younger set such as recent college graduates, young couples, with or without children. The Insight represents a very compelling alternative to small SUVs that offer the same or less utulity. And unlike that CRX HF you drove in high school, you can even bring your friends along for the ride. Great job Honda, keep on giving the big three a reason to worry.

Replying to: backy (Feb 03, 2009 4:54 pm) Well, I would compare with a 5 door, not a sedan or roadster. Not wide enough for 3 adults seems like the definition of a compact to me. I had a Forester when I test drove the Prius - cargo room is notably smaller in the hybrid (no surprise). I fit better in the Honda Fit than I do in a Civic, so I'll have to sit inside these models to see up close.

All cars are niche cars. You may want speed, economy, handling, capacity for towing or carrying people. The Honda Insight is designed to be economical in purchase and driving costs. It is not meant for a family of 8 or to tow a boat or to race a Corvette. It is meant to not cost a ton of money in purchase price or operating costs.

All 3 are great cars. Personally, I like the hatchback. The Civic Hybrid has the battery pack in the trunk which reduces trunk area. Also the seats do not go down so there is not much trunk space and there is no pass thru. I also think the 2010 Prius is a great shape. I love the rake of the hood as it goes up the windshield. The aerodynamic shape is great. The Prius (in my opinion) is a LOT better than the Insight as far as exterior looks go. If it was on exterior looks alone the Prius wins hands down. However, the dash of the Prius has that little slit for the speedo IN THE MIDDLE of the dash. I can't stand that. When I drive a car, my view is of the dash. That look alone made me order the Insight. My car will arrive in June.
