Anyone who buys the Prius with that dash is an idiot.

Then there's a LOT of idiots out there.

Have you seen the dash on the 2010 Prius? Looks a lot nicer than the current dash, IMO.

I apologize for saying idiot. I am an idiot for saying that. After a posted, I looked at it and wished I could take it back. Yes, there are a lot of idiots out there. The Prius is everywhere. What I should have said was that "I personally prefer the dash of the Insight and do not care for the dash on the Prius. When I drive a car I prefer to look straight ahead to the gauges, not to the right. Sorry.

It is technically a mid-size by EPA definitions but it still feels like a compact.

If Toyota felt it were really a mid-sizer then it would not need the Camry hybrid.

The Insight is definitely a tad smaller but they will still be cross-shopped (as will the Civic hybrid).

While the Prius certainly looks like a compact from the outside, one ride in the backseat and you realize it really is mid-size. There's more room back there than any compact I've ever been in.

The Camry Hybrid targets a different market and Toyota has many other overlapping models. Take a look at their SUV line-up and you'll see...

It's been a while since I've been in a Prius. How is rear head room?

The smallish cargo area ruled it out for me at the time, though I mostly test drove it out of curiosity.

Rear head room is better than you might think from looking at the outside of the car, but marginal for anyone over 5'10" or so depending on torso length. Leg room is pretty good in back, although the seat isn't wide enough for 3 normal-sized adults.

Are you saying the Prius' cargo area is smallish compared to a Legacy sedan or a Miata?

Techno geeks and fuel thrifty car buyers may now rejoice...Honda has done it! There is officially a hybrid that first time buyers can put on their shopping list, and not to mention another alternative to the seriously overrated (and overpriced) Toyota Prius. Furthermore, the Insight appears to have a more fun to drive nature than the Prius. No, its not a sport sedan by any stretch of the imagination but it is more involving. The Prius seems more devoted to being isolated from the road, which is probably what its buyers are asking for anyway. Insight buyers are likely to be that of a younger set such as recent college graduates, young couples, with or without children. The Insight represents a very compelling alternative to small SUVs that offer the same or less utulity. And unlike that CRX HF you drove in high school, you can even bring your friends along for the ride. Great job Honda, keep on giving the big three a reason to worry.

Well, I would compare with a 5 door, not a sedan or roadster.

Not wide enough for 3 adults seems like the definition of a compact to me.

I had a Forester when I test drove the Prius - cargo room is notably smaller in the hybrid (no surprise).

I fit better in the Honda Fit than I do in a Civic, so I'll have to sit inside these models to see up close.

Honda Insight is a niche car by rookie60

All cars are niche cars. You may want speed, economy, handling, capacity for towing or carrying people. The Honda Insight is designed to be economical in purchase and driving costs. It is not meant for a family of 8 or to tow a boat or to race a Corvette. It is meant to not cost a ton of money in purchase price or operating costs.
