Consumer reports shows the 05 as having relatively average reliability although it has worse than average reliability in the traditionally European problem areas of fuel and electrical. Not sure how much different the 05 was compared to my previous 06 in terms of the parts and workmanship but part of the reason I got rid of my 06 was the major reliability problems I've had with it since I got it and that the warranty was about to go in about 8k miles. In the last year alone, I've had to leave it with Volvo 3 times overnight or longer to fix an unanticipated problem, all of which involved electrical problems (battery, locking/window system going wonkers, computer software problems and ignition) not to mention the several recalls and the initial problems in the 1st few months that were common to other S40 owners (rear brakes squeaking and accumulated brake dust, wiper blades wearing out, etc.). I thought about getting an extended warranty for another year since I wasn't quite ready to give up this car but the dealer quoted me 1400 for a Volvo warranty and 1200 through their own dealership. Didn't think it was worth it. If you really like the S40 and feel safer with the peace of mind an extended warranty gives, go for it although I can't quite speak to the pricing other than 2600 for an additional 4 years and 48k is pretty good compared to the extra 1 year 12k they offered me. I think in the last year alone for all the warranty work I had done, it probably would have come close to the 2600 if it was out of warranty.

Thanks for your feedback. We've had the car for 4 years and have had no major problems. I ended up getting the warranty for 2600. 4 years of road service is included which saves me 100.00 a year for AAA. So it comes down to 2200. The car was involved in 2 accidents and I think thats what made me do it. Peace of mind. It's my daughters car and she is 6 hours away in college. My service guy told me that he hasn't seen too many problems with the 05 but he has seen 3 to 4000 dollar repair bills. So..I feel better knowing its under warranty for another 4 years. It's the extended warranty that Ford offers since the car was out of warranty by volvo. Thanks again for responding.
