Oil pressure gauge fluctuation by giants56

Hi I have a 1999 Chevy Tahoe and the oil pressure has always stayed constant at 40. Now all of the sudden it is self regulating and fluctuating between 36 and almost 60 depending on acceleration etc. Is this a sign my oil pump is on it's way out?

"oil pressure has always stayed constant at 40".

Almost sounds like your oil pressure gauge started working. In my '04 Tahoe oil pressure on idle is at about 40 psi but any higher engine speed gives higher pressure. Pressure is at about 43-44 psi at 2000 rpm what the highway speed makes engine to go and it goes near 60 psi if I rev the engine up. Oil pressure in my Tahoe has always been fluctuating depending on engine speed.

36 psi sounds a little low though but as your engine probably has some miles on it the pressure could be a little bit lower. This also depends on oil viscosity.
