| about 2 years ago my power steering quit working. i was driving at the time and i found if i reved the engine a little it would loosen up so i could drive it home. at idle you couldn't turn the wheel. i took it to my mechanic and he said the pump had bits of metal in it so he had to replace the pump and the rack and pinion too.he installed rebuilt units for both items. when i picked it up i noticed it was whining when i started it but it went away when warmed up. the steering would stick sometimes but just a little and it went away quickly after warmup. after trips back my mechanic replaced the pump with a brand new one from the dealer. this was replaced with another new pump. finally whn that didn't fix it he drained the fluid and put lucas oil treatment in it. this seemed to help but it was always a little stiff on startup . finally my mechanic replaced both the pump and rack again. it is still noisy at startup although that disappears quickly. the steering still can hardly be turned until it warms up a little (2-4 minutes usually depending on how cold it is outside.) also the colder it is the harder it is to turn . warmer it's ok. i have to take it back to my mechanic in two weeks for inspection and i want to know if there is anything you could tell me that i could pass on to him to get this fixed. i have been going to him for over 25 years and this is the first vehicle that he hasn't been able to fix for me.help please ! | |
