2009 Subaru WRX vs. 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart - Although it doesn't turn into a corner like an old-gen WRX, the 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX is the better of these two sport compacts. It doesn't matter that the 2009 WRX lacks fancy differentials and a twin-clutch gearbox. It's quicker, lighter and cheaper than the 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart.(more)

Stuff the 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX into a corner, and you know it deserves a rematch with the 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart.

I totally agree. The wrx will smoke the rallyart with its fancy trans and all.

C&D also agrees, in a comparo they also put the WRX well ahead of the Ralliart. Actually the tranny was one of their biggest gripes.

While both cars seem extremely fun to drive, I question their pricing. As an example, the Mitsu is 30K and yet you don't get a NAV system? Or the Subi at 28K doesn't include the top of the line stereo? For that kind of money, I would rather have a VW GTI with far superior build quality with only a minor hit on the driving experience. Or may I humbly present the car that beat both in the last comparision test, The Mazdaspeed3? My car didn't top out over 25K and gets far superior mileage (25.5mpg) in mixed driving. Just my .02$

My (albeit much older) GTI couldn't hold a candle to my WRX for reliability. I'm not buying into the "far superior" build quality of a VW. Now that I've lived with all wheel drive, I'm not willing to give it up.

Let's see VW bring an R36 based on the Golf VI.

The GTI is definitely a step (or two) down in the power dept.

I tested the Mazdaspeed3. There's no comparison to driving an FWD after the AWD (or RWD!). The sensation of being dragged around by the front wheels was miserable, especially in tight turns where the rear wheels are sadly left to do nothing. When you're sliding through a turn and asking the two fronts to do all the work when they're barely connected to the road it leaves a lot to be desired. Four wheels on a car - may as well have them all doing something! Even the idea of slamming down on the throttle from a stop is completely pointless in an FWD car. As bad as it looks and feels, the cabin full of tire smoke ain't worth it.

Economy-wise though I agree the MS3 is a better choice than the Mitsu or WRX. Though, after my MS3 test drive I will never bother test driving another performance FWD car. Not worth the savings.

And a GTI? You couldn't pay me to step foot on a VW lot. A sporty Wabbit sounds about as fun as, as - hmmm - can't think of a more ubiquitous chick car for comparison. And for such great build quality, you have to wonder why VW had so many recalls in 2006-2007; more than they've had in a decade...

Material quality is important but an unreliable lemon of a femmehatch with a drab interior isn't my first choice for a sporty platform...

you won't see all of those stupid VW quality defects on your new '09 Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X. VW's sauce is weak, smelly and not all that attractive. Where is this supposed desire in America for VW's? Mitsu spanks Mazda, Nissan, Toyota, Hon-duh, Audi, VW, Porsche, MB, etc., and on and on and on.

I'd buy a new Suzuki before I'd buy a new VW.

I bought a new Jetta in '00. Never again. Lemon^3.

Very comfortable, but mechanically unreliable. Everything plastic broke, particularly in -30 weather.

Even better, is everyone that has owned a VW between '00 and '08 has a story to tell about their windows going down, and not coming back up.

I'm all done with Volkswagon. I've got three friends that own Audi A4/S4's, and their cars in the shop at least once every other month. Very dissappinting.

I've had zero problems on my Toyota 4-Runner, and so far zero problems on both Subaru's I own.

It's funny, VW owners either love them or hate them and will never buy another. It's hard to find anyone indifferent about them.

They had plenty of window regulators and ignition coils fail, but let's be fair - I think they've improved. Plus, the GTI is definitely mostly male-owned.

It's just not quite cranked-up-a-notch enough to compete with the WRX and Ralliart, IMO. The R32 was.
