Hmm... interesting thought. I think that the RAV4, as a whole, is a bit outdated... It seems on par more with "Jeep", which IMO left its popularity in the 90's. Looking at Toyota's website and vehicle categories along the top, the RAV4 is at the lowest end of the pricing structure for SUVs and Vans, whereas the Venza is basically the "luxury" high end model, next to the Avalon in the Cars category.

I think just based off of their pricing structure, the Venza may be the modern day version of the RAV4, with Crossovers being somewhat of the "new Jeeps" of this era.

The RAV4 is a physically smaller vehicle than the Venza. It's about 7 inches shorter in length and a couple inches narrower (possibly a little more, as that's factoring in the "overfender" on the Sport).

I think people who look at the RAV4, versus a Highlander or Venza (which are almost identical in length and width), are doing so because they see the RAV4 as a physically smaller vehicle.

If you aligned each Toyota car model with an associated CUV, it'd look like this:
  • Corolla -> RAV4
  • Camry -> Highlander
  • Avalon -> Venza

    There is pricing overlap between all three CUVs, the same way a Corolla XRS can be more expensive than a Camry LE, or a Camry XLE is more expensive than an Avalon XL.

    Similar comparisons can be made within the Ford lineup (Taurus -> Edge) and Nissan lineup (Maxima -> Murano) as well.

    you are close, so i will make a couple of revisions, as best i know.
    camry = avalon -> venza
    fusion -> edge.
    my guess is you are referring to their marketing.

    That's correct -- I was referring to the product positioning, not the actual technical basis of the vehicle (i.e. the Edge is based on the same platform as the Fusion).

    I would disagree with "Camry=Avalon," again in terms of positioning. Although they share the same platform, the Avalon is marketed at a different target than the Camry. Same thing with the Venza versus the Highlander -- same platform, different targets.

    Why I purchased a Venza by pacpark4

    I test drove an Edge Limited, a Nissan Murano SL AWD, and a Toyota Venza FWD V6. Each vehicle had its pros and cons, but one thing was definitely noticeable with the Venza than the other vehicles, fit/finish/price. The quality of leather in the Venza was far superior to the Edge. The Venza was much bigger than the Murano, and options/price for the Venza was a better deal than either vehicle. On terms of quietness, it was a toss up between the Murano & Venza, but I guess I finally decided on Toyota's reputation and resale value over the other vehicles.
    See for yourself, the Venza is a head turner and a conversation piece!!

    Test Drive one soon!

    The Venza is a very well thought out vehicle. It is also a "tweener" - meant to fit a niche between existing vehicles where Toyota was losing to Murano when RAV4 was too small/spartan and Highlander was too truck-like.

    However, the gas mileage is attractive to the loaded RAV4 shopper. The lease deals are not great and sadly, this iced it for me. Got $5K off list on a 2009 Murano LE and good combination of residual and money factor.

    Otherwise, it would have been a Venza. Toyota leather is a notch above and they still do interior dash in a stylish classic manner better than the rest. On interiors, I feel Honda is too "out there", Nissan a bit reserved stingy and Ford - well they are trying but have a long way to go.

    My last comment is strictly an aesthetic one. The difficulty in getting a lot of color combinations also drove the decision. I'm not a big fan of all these two tone (and sometimes three) on the light interiors. I don't know if that's a Toyota manufacturing decision or the dealer's. Supposedly, there is a Sport edition of the Venza starting to arrive but no leather option. If this existed, I would have potentially been worth the stretch.

    Frankly, I think if you are leasing, it's hard to go wrong with a great deal on any of these vehicles. I just wouldn't want to be driving a Ford after 80K of hard driving.

    Good luck.

    Highlander is too truck like?! Owned an 05 for 3 years and still miss it and test drove the 08 and just didn't like the size and hood position from driver's perspective. Truck like is the LAST thing I'd call a Highlander.

    I beg to differ. The CR-V is much more traditional compared to the lopsided yet-attractive Venza design.

    Thank you for posting the Motor Trend comparison. Those are the exact three crossovers we are considering. Looks like the Toyota Venza is a strong first place in this venue.
