Why I bought the Murano. by jayrider

I test drove the edge first because I really wanted to buy it. Drove a fully loaded ltd awd and was impressed with the interior --seats , leather, etc. Started it up and the engine sounded coarse and driving it was disappointing. Throttle was touchy at low speeds and the whole experience was unrefined. Should have driven another one -- really liked the lincoln mkx better and looked one over but never drove one. The deals were underwhelming in october. The murano test drive sold me instantly. Smooth, quiet, luxurious interior. Bought a Sl AWD with premium package, leather, panoramic moonroof for a great price. This was my first import purchase in 28 years and I wasn't pleased with myself but there was no denying the fact that the murano was by far the better buy.

Of course, completely ignoring the fact that you completely left the Venza out of the picture... Plus, Venza is getting better consumer reviews "by far"... Looks like someone's trying to convince themselves they're happy with the wrong purchase, which is why they came to a Venza forum... being oh so completely satisfied with their Murano, and all...

EDIT: By the way, to quote a few Murano reviews by realistic customers:

"When driving between 1000 & 1500 RPM and going approximately 30-40 MPH, the vehicle makes a sound that sounds like whistling brakes but it is not the brakes. Upon review by the dealership we were able to duplicate in every model of the 2009 Murano. This was being turned into the engineers at Nissan to design a fix. This was discovered in July 2008 and yet to hear resolution... Tires have been rotated and maintained and need replaced at 15000 miles. Horrible in rain/snow & I drive for a living. Not fair."

"I purchased this vehicle 11/08. I have owned 3 other Nissan vehicles and I have enjoyed driving them. The 2009 Murano has been a huge disappointment. I recently took this vehicle on a 6 hour road trip and I was actually in pain when I arrived at my destination. The driver's seat is rock hard and has very little leg and back support. If you have leg and back problems, please think twice before purchasing this vehicle."

"I traded my totally reliable 2008 Honda CR-V in for my Murano. And at less than two weeks old and with 760 miles on the odometer, I was greeted Thanksgiving day with a car that was totally dead."

Easy on the venom, venomshot. This thread is also posted in the Murano forum. I have not had any problems with my Murano so I really don't have to spend any time in buyers remorse.I drove an Edge and really wanted it to be right but it wasn't. Which is why I posted in this thread. As far as I know, there are no rules that state you have to drive all three to comment. I assume you have thoroughly researched each vehicle and carefully test drove each. Your comments would be more valid than mine. Congratulations. What are you driving? The Venza looks like a fine vehicle. Didn't even know it existed when I was shopping --- really wasn't looking for a station wagon but I might be interested in 33 months when I turn my leased Murano in and walk away. There will be quite a few choices at that time --- three years is enough for me with any vehicle so if it makes you feel any better, the Murano won't be on that list. Good thoughts your way.

I understand, but the main reason I responded was the end of your first post, " there was no denying the fact that the murano was by far the better buy." The intial post was about Murano vs Venza vs Edge, and maybe I took your post wrong but it seemed like you were considering the Murano just a better buy than the Ford?? You said nothing about test driving the Venza, or any other car for that matter, and in that sense, ANY crossover would really be a better buy than the Ford Edge... I just did not think it fair that after driving one car you saying the Murano is by far the better buy.

Anyway, the three quotes were not from me, I do not own a Murano or Venza (yet) but they were from customers that had reviewed the Murano on Edmunds.com, and I posted them simply to point out that at least from those it did not SEEM that the Murano was hands down the "better buy" of all options.

The reason I stated that the murano was a better buy than the ford was I got 2k under invoice on the murano and ford hadn't started with all the current price breaks. I'm visiting the Bay Area the first week of Feb. Will be leasing some junker at the airport. If I see a new venza on 101 being driven by some dude with a big smile on his face, I'll be sure to wave.

Why we got the Edge by hardhawk

We selected our 2008 Edge Limited for a variety of reasons. The Murano was out from the start due to the nearest dealer being 100 miles away. Even if there was a Nissan dealer close, the Murano does not have the practicality that the Edge has. It is just too small inside. I had seen the Venza at the Chicago Auto Show and liked its looks, as it looks like basically a Toyota Edge. Did not care for the curvy grille as much as the Edge grille. Got the Edge before the Venza came out, but had the Venza been out I am sure we would have given it a strong look as our Ford dealer is also a Toyota dealer. The Edge is not as polished inside as the Toyota but the seats are very comfortable and we love the way it drives. The SYNC is really nice too. The Edge was a leap of faith for us as we have never in our lives owned a Ford product before the Edge. I was worried about Ford reliability as compared to the imports, but the ironic thing is that in 14 months of owning the Edge it has not had a single service issue other than oil changes and tire rotation. It has been perfect. If buying today I would give the Venza a look as well as the Edge. Bottom line is that we have zero complaints with the Edge and are very satisfied. The Murano would appeal if we had a dealer close and did not have kids and "stuff" to haul. It would be very nice for a couple who wanted a sportier crossover and were not so concerned about room inside. Frankly, you cannot go wrong with any of these fine vehicles.

if the Venza competes more, or as much, with the RAV4 as it does with either the Edge or the Murano.

Hmm... interesting thought. I think that the RAV4, as a whole, is a bit outdated... It seems on par more with "Jeep", which IMO left its popularity in the 90's. Looking at Toyota's website and vehicle categories along the top, the RAV4 is at the lowest end of the pricing structure for SUVs and Vans, whereas the Venza is basically the "luxury" high end model, next to the Avalon in the Cars category.

I think just based off of their pricing structure, the Venza may be the modern day version of the RAV4, with Crossovers being somewhat of the "new Jeeps" of this era.
