Only about 10 seconds elapse in our drive of the 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet before we realize that we've just begun a love/hate relationship with Porsche's most brilliant piece of technology in the last 20 years — the Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, which, roughly translated, means "badass tranny." 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet Full Test

Replying to: KarenS (Dec 19, 2008 8:20 am) i found the 08 much more satisfying. There's an element of danger and driver involvement that has been removed with the PDK, and that danger is what brings the excitement to the driving my experience.

What's a PDK... I honestly didn't need to read the whole article to even find out, when I saw that the PDK shifter has to be pushed FORWARD to upshift... What????? I thought that Porsche and it's Engineers were racers at heart...??? Why is the shifting backwards... I wouldn't even bother to test drive it, that would kill the deal for me alone... And yes, I LOVE Porsche, but I'm really disappointed in that move. BMW did the same thing in a Z3 I test drove a long time ago and I kept hitting 3rd instead of 5th... Bad setup to make upshifting forward, do they think we are retarded and forward means "GO MORE"... blah.... |

I feel sorry for those who have discounted the 2009 PDK model for the 2008 and older units. There is no comparison. First, I recently traded in my 2006 S Cab for a 2009 PDK S Cab. No comparison. The Direct Fuel Injection has added more horsepower, but most importantly, I have seen an incredible difference in fuel efficiency. On the highway, in my '06, I used to get about 21 miles to the gallon; now, I have been getting almost 30 + miles to the gallon. Those who own a 911 know what I am talking about when it comes to fuel consumption, it's dreadful. Also, because of the completely redesigned transmission, I never have to worry about an RMS leak issue. Even the 997.1 had some issues that has plagued the 996 since introduced. I live in Texas so I welcome the ventilated seats on a summer afternoon. Also, it is nice to have the intregrated iPod and Bluetooth technology on the headunit as opposed to the aftermarket system that was in my '06 model. For those who opted for a 2008 model with a manual transmission, you should have purchased a '09 with a manual gearbox. You would have more horsepower and better amenities.

Replying to: rdmiller4me (Oct 04, 2009 6:19 am) I agree wholeheartedly... I went back and forth about 08 manual(significantly discounted) vs. 09 manual... pdk was ok, but for me, I had to get a manual gearbox... more involvement, more visceral feel... what made the decision for an 09 ultimately was the technology (ipod/bluetooth) and direct injection... I am getting 27mpg highway
