2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo MR vs. 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP - Consider for a moment that the G8 GXP is the most powerful Pontiac ever built, including all those Firebirds with halitosis-spewing poultry on their hoods. Don't burn your Burt Reynolds posters, though. This four-door sedan promises to continue the Trans Am's legacy of high performance. (more)

We're playing follow-the-leader in the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR and the 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP. At the word "go," the heavy-lidded gaze of the G8's front fascia suddenly swells up in the Evo's rearview mirror. The sound of a rip-snorting V8 gains urgency before crowding and then finally overwhelming the Evo's tepid turbocharged whoosh as the G8 elbows its way past the Mitsubishi on the road.

What must it be like to remain in perpetual adolescence? The entire auto industry is melting down and the car companies are getting murdered over not having high mileage cars that people want, and then we get this review. Seriously, under what real world conditions does one get to practically experience the advantages of of the Evo MR over the G8? Both are not fuel friendly, but at least the G8 has a practical side to it. Easily seats 5 and has a useful trunk. Why anyone would purchase the GXP version of the GT is another mystery. Just where are you going to use the extra horsepower and torque?

I fully realize that car magazines cater to the "performance" crowd, I just wonder how much of a niche market that is going to be in a few more years.

I was a bit scared when I first saw the heading of the comparo; excited, but scared, as the Evo GSR was heavier than the previous lancers. Still, it's unbeatable!

My friend has an Evo and it breaks down all the time. Seems to have a lot of bugs to me, but I know my friend wishes he never bought the Mitsubuishi Evo.

Wow what must it be like to be the classical orwellian fascist? Seriously who are you to tell people what they should buy, your trying to say I shouldn't have the right to buy this type of car should I choose. That is what you are saying as you say they shouldn't build them.

Hey Postulation. American car companies are actually doing a great job, do you really think its about mileage? Where do you get your information? Some people are getting 32 MPG with the G8. Do your research before you post such negative comments. Thats better than a lot of vehicles out there, If you want to put YOUR family and loved ones into a tiny plastic and aluminum sub compact hybrid then go for it, or why dont you just ride a motorcycle as they get very good gas mileage.

If you want good mileage with the G8 they key is to have the correct PSI on the tires, and the G8 actually tells you if your PSI needs adjustment, and if you drive moderate you will do well. Of course using cruise control on highways also helps.

The G8 is a perfect blend of family, sport sedan combo. I took a V8 out and I was impressed. It would be so much fun to tool around with that kind of power. It is amazing how good it really does on mileage. That is the key to including practicality and fun in one package. First off, the car is not totally aimed for mileage. If you want that, then you may look at a hybird or get an Accord or Camry.

I was impressed with the car, though I do believe they could do a bit better on the quality of certain parts of the car. Fit and finish was good, but noticed several areas of where I thought would break down easily with wear. I think GM needs to work on their paint quality. I have noticed on most new GM cars, they swirl mark so easily, and are not too forgiving when you try to reverse the problem with wax. I think it relates to the clear coat they use. Because, I am the type to look at that too. Noticed most GM cars have bad swirl marks, even brand new. Though, I blame some on the dealers with the scrubbing the crap out of them, even though they just sit on the lot. I cringe when I see that, new paint and they swirl it all up.

I am going to try next time to get a car right off the truck with the wrapper on, that way the dealer doesn't have a chance to detail anything. 09 Acura TSX or Accord.

If I was going to stick with GM, I would probably get a G8.

The car might be called a poor man's 'Vette. Notice its MSRP? That's quit a bit less than what the author of the "Lancer Evo MR vs G8 GXP" article predicted it would be. Anyway, I plan to test drive one this spring when they first arrive at my local dealership. I wonder if its exhaust note will be muted, like the G8 GT's is?

"Why anyone would purchase the GXP version of the GT is another mystery."

To get the manual.

I hear where you're coming from, being one who buys 4-cylinder vehicles for their gas mileage. But given those green propensities, I can't readily explain why I now lust over a four-door muscle V-8 with stick. Especially now as we're nearing peak oil. Must've been growing up idolizing a giant kid we all called "Jeep," who had a big bad V-8 (413 cu. in.) Plymouth Fury.
