My auto history isn't so good. Ford owned a piece of Kia for a long time before the turmoil that wound up with Hyundai outbidding Ford for all of Kia. Per Wikipedia.

Hoover/Stanford has a case study about it.

Massive discounts will tempt many, but investing in growth stocks are a better buy.

indeed Ford owned a piece of Kia, but it was a very small share IIRC, like 15%. I'll have ta go back and re-read up on it, I spose.

Those two S.Korean automakers just keep improving year-on-year, though.

Every time you say how Kia has done so well I pop over to see where they rate on the dependability survey. You could be right after all hyundai has moved up. But check as I might and Again kia is down near the bottom.

once again, everyone's experience is different. I have owned two Kia's and except for a recall or TSB item here or there I was very happy with both of them. I think that dealership's have a lot to do with it. Every time I hear someone talk about their dealership's service department giving them a hard time I just cringe. Everything we wanted or asked for in both the cars and the dealership were always taken care of for us.

Without a lot of thinking or worrying. I can say the same thing for my '08 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS, too. Great customer service and honest customer service. That goes for both maker's service departments. Every brand makes some dud cars and every brand has some crappy dealers.

Funny thing that. My youngest brother bought a Kia Sportage a bunch of years ago. Now he isn't the best person in the world at maintaining cars so I'm expecting the worst.

Lo and behold here we arer almost 10 years and 145K or so down the road and teh thing still runs fine. He's had few expenses other than routine. The only big expense was because he ran over something.

fezo, running over something.

The other day I was just leaving the dentist in Tucson. I had gone maybe a block when all of a sudden WHAM I hit something in the road. Only not an animal, something metal and clunky sounding, but positioned in such a way that it made a big impact on my right rear tire.

Flat tire. Sears no longer open(where I bought the Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S Pinna's at) that night. Me=no work the next day, Tucson=80 miles from my home, so, I've got one of those little donut spare tires on, right?

Son and I=hotel in Tucson that night. The next morning, son still asleep in motel, I run over to Sears and they fix the Pirelli for free. I had bought Road Hazard Warranties on the Pirelli's.

So, that bought me some extra car magazine reading at Border's and Barnes and Noble, and CD shopping at my favorite Tucson record store called Zia's. Worked out well.

Usually I like to be able to see the obstacles in the road ahead of running over them, but as you know and I know, that's not always possible.

Good story. Won't question whether the motel cost more than the tire would have....

I wish I could remember what my brother hit - something that fell off a truck in front of him. Some piece underneath....

It's never just one tire...you really should buy at least two. So yeah, the motel was probably cheaper.

well I bet there were people that had good luck with a YUGO. But still there is a reason Kia is close to the bottom and has been for years. The posted survey is taken for new car buyers and sent within the first year they bought the car. So why would Hyundai move up the list and Kia not? Does it mean Hyundais improvement means nothing or that Kia's lack of movement doesn't mean anything? When people research buying a car should they ignore what others are saying about the car?

But that is off track. I predict Kia will not be rated better than average in 2010 or 2011 or 2012. In fact they might be in the same position they are today. And I predict all of those cars sitting out in the open will hurt profits for all of the manufacturers through 2012.

Now what do you predict and we can compare.
