What is the Control Cable under the left sliding door?

Our '08 LS Uplander has a flexible controller cable (a standard braided steel cable that slides inside a black sheath, like a hood release cable) located under the left (driver's side) sliding door, tucked behind slider hinge track. It appears to be factory-installed but it isn't mentioned in my manual. Where the cable starts, just behind the driver's seat doorpost is the cable's control handle. When I move this handle, the cable moves in the sheath but nothing happens except we hear a clink inside the wall just behind the door and in front of the rear heater blower louvres. One might think it should control the lift-gate door or the gas flap, but it doesn't do anything. Does anyone know what it's supposed to do? Would it control an accessory that our LS doesn't have; or could it be unhooked from something important?
