Prius-Not a comfortable fit. by newyorker6

I was looking and sitting in the Prius this past weekend in South NJ and being 6' tall I really felt cramped. Not enough left leg room for my long drives down to the shore each weekend. I was very disappointed and not sure what to do. I guess when in doubt do nothing. Has anyone else felt the same way? Does anyone know of a new car with all the high mileage that gives driver comfort too??

Try the VW Jetta TDI. Many are getting 50 MPG on the road. They are much better handling than the Prius. Better quality materials overall. I think you would really like the Sportwagen if you haul lots of stuff to the beach. My few rides with a friend in his 2009 Prius was not very impressive. Noisy and rough riding.

I can tell you your figures are a myth. Go sit in both then get back to me. I have and the numbers do not match reality. Same goes for the Accord and Civic that my head touches the headliner. I don't like driving with the seat tilted back to have enough headroom. Besides he already said HE DID NOT LIKE THE PRIUS. He is looking for an alternative that gets equal mileage. Maybe you have some other options in that price range and MPG.

PS
Luggage space in the Sportwagen is over double the Prius.

Math is not a myth. Those are actual measurements.

Gary screamed, "HE DID NOT LIKE THE PRIUS."

He said he thought the driver position was cramped - not that he "did not like" the Prius. But I was not pushing him into a Prius at all.

I was just letting him know that if the thought a Prius driver position was cramped, that the Jetta will be more cramped. That's the extent of the advice I was giving him.

If he thinks the driver positions on those two cars are too cramped, then there ARE no "high-mileage" options for a man his size, at least ones which I know about.

That is just your opinion based on some numbers that are erroneous. You need to get out and sit in these cars yourself and you will see the numbers rarely reflect reality. The Accord has good numbers and a horrible head room in reality. Are the measurements made from the front of the seat or the rear. BIG DIFFERENCE MY FRIEND. No substitute for going out and sitting in and test driving a vehicle.

gary says, "No substitute for going out and sitting in and test driving a vehicle. "

I agree with that completely.

But the numbers are not erroneous - they are there just for this purpose - to help drivers in advance decide which cars might meet their required "interior dimensions" so that they can eliminate certain cars without making the trek to the dealership.

Some drivers have long torsos, and need seats which adjust lower, etc etc.

Base on his or her body shape, a Jetta might or might NOT seat them more comfortably.

But the inside for the driver is slightly smaller, measuring apples versus apples.

From the original post the person said it was the left leg that did not have sufficient room in the Prius. Does your specs give the distance where your feet go. Some cars have a big hump right where the left foot rests. That can be very uncomfortable. You don't want to rest your left foot under the brake peddle. The reason I do NOT believe those numbers is my experience with Honda. The head room in the Accord was listed at 40.4", the 2005 Passat was listed at 37.8". In reality the Passat was at least 3 more inches of clearance from the top of my head to the headliner.

I stand on my contention that you cannot believe the numbers posted on a spec sheet. Both had sun roofs. Go drive the car is the only sure way to know. In the case of the Accord hybrid, they were not allowing test drives. We know how that joke of a car ended. It did not take a recession to send it to the scrap heap of bad ideas.

There you go again....condemning an entire SYSTEM just because you THINK you found one mistake in the system.

Anyway, my friend has a 2009 Prius - I'll go measure the headroom and report back.
