Comparison Test: 2009 Acura TL SH-AWD vs. 2009 Infiniti G37 Journey - Sportiness transcends sheer door count when it comes to the desirability of a sedan these days, and two examples of this are the 2009 Acura TL SH-AWD and the 2009 Infiniti G37 Journey. Sedans only in form and more coupelike in dynamic function, these two cars take their sporting credentials seriously. (more)

Replying to: sam_k (Jul 08, 2009 7:18 am) or anyone else I am interested in fully loaded G37 sedan AWD with Sport Package and the only car that i have found to come close to it is theACURA TL ( i wont buy German). thanks for sharing your thoughts on thecomparison.. i personally like the G's handling better but the TL's body is more attractive. I'm also debating whether to buy or lease ( i only drive 6k a year) plus i have a 2005 Infiniti coupe that i would be trading in ( only 22k miles...i love the car so much but i need more passenger room) Any thoughts? Seems infiniti has much better residual than Acura? Andrew

When I compared costs for a no money down lease, a loaded G37x was about $100 less/month to lease than the Acura TL SH-AWD with technology package. I leased my G37x for 10k miles/year. Based on the amount you drive, it might be cheaper for you to lease than to buy, especially if you like to get a new car every few years. I know people say that leasing is more expensive than buying but that's only true if you're the type of person that keeps your cars for a really long time. If you like to get a new car every few years, you'll lose just as much money (if not more money) buying a new car every few years as you would leasing a new car every few years. Plus lease payments are usually lower than loan payments unless you put a large downpayment or take out a long loan like 5 or 6 years. I'd rather not lock my money in a car so I lease with no money down and even put the tax in the payment. I've seen some dealers advertise 8k miles/year leases (like www.ramseyinfiniti.com) but I've never seen the money factor or residual percentage on those kind of leases and I'm not even sure if the leasing company is Infiniti Financial Services. With Infiniti, 39 month lease payments are almost always cheaper than 36 month leases even if the money factor (i.e. interest rate) is slightly higher on the 39 month. The 3 extra payments make the payment lower. Since you currently have an Infiniti, there's a $1000 loyalty credit to lease a G37x that you can use as a cap cost reduction (i.e. down payment) on the lease. If you're buying, there's $2500 marketing support cash incentive unless you take advantage of the special financing. Here's a link to the incentives. Make sure to scroll down. http://www.edmunds.com/new/2009/infiniti/g37/101115176/incentives.html I agree that the G's handling is better. It has a longer wheelbase than the Acura and a shorter body so there's less body overhang. Plus the G37x is lighter, has more horsepower and has a 7 speed automatic (versus the 5 speed in the Acura). But I really liked the interior on the Acura with the technology package over the Infiniti. Don't get me wrong, the Infiniti interior is very nice but I think the Acura's is nicer. When I factored in costs, the loyalty credit I received since I was coming off an Infiniti lease and the damage that I would have to pay for on my previous Infiniti had I not gotten another one, it made financial sense for me to lease another Infiniti. Btw, I won't buy/lease German either. Their reliability just isn't as good as the Japanese cars. Obviously any new car that has problems will be covered by the warranty but who wants the inconvenience of having to go back to the dealer all the time to get problems fixes. The last 2 cars that one of my friends leased were German. One one a Mercedes and one was a BMW. The Mercedes needed major transmission work after less than a year. And the BMW wouldn't start a week after he got it and had to be flatbedded out of his garage. Sam |

This is like comparing apples to oranges or a pickup truck to a hatchback. Throw some realworld conditions like a little water on the road and the G37 would take a "drubbing". I was faced with deciding between the G37 and TL. Having a friend with a G35, my original preference was for the Infiniti G37. I drove both cars back to back several times. > The scoring was close enough between the two that the G37's > $2,730 sticker price advantage took on increased significance. Add AWD to the G37, the weight and sticker price advantage disappears. Acura's SH-AWD (Super Handling) is far superior to Infiniti's Intelligent All-Wheel drive. Once you understand how to drive a SH-AWD, you'll find it's the closest thing to cornering on rails (Acura calls it a Yaw moment). I found the Acura more of a solid firm feel which gave the illusion of going slower than you actually are, and the Infinity the opposite, where you felt the speed more. The Infiniti G37x (AWD) with 328 hp. 7 speed automatic vs the Acura with 305 hp. 5 Speed both run around 5.9 sec. So straight line performance is the same. More is not always better. The Acura engine seems more refined while the G37s is a little wilder. Exterior appearance I began with a preference for the Infiniti but found the Acura styling grew on me and looked sportier where as the Infiniti front started to look more and more like a Hyuandai with all the round curves. A 180 degree flip for me. I felt the demographic group for the TL is younger than for the G37. From the outside the Acura line seem to make it appear much larger. Acura interior is far nicer than the Infiniti. Even the quality of the leather seems better. The G37 front seats are very comfortable but the Acura even has shoulder bolstering. I really like the Infiniti's signature Analog clock. Nice touch of class. The back seat in the Infinity is cramped for leg room. The Acura rear seat leg room is much better and even comparable to an Infinity M35. Just look at the two rear seat pictures in the review and compare. Acura has a perfect 5 star crash test rating. The G37 only received a 4 in frontal passenger. Not a deal breaker by itself but another straw. End of the day, a few tenths of a second difference in 0-60 time in optimal conditions isn't enough to base a decision to buy one car over another car. You may have better compared stereos or blue tooth connectivity... |

> Here's a side by side comparison of the G37x and TL SH-AWD specs. > http://www.edmunds.com/apps/nvc/edmunds/VehicleComparison?styleid=101115176&styl- - eid=101082859&maxvehicles=5&refid=&op=3&tab=specs > In my opinion, they should have compare the G37x with the sport package to the > TL SH-AWD. That would have been more of an apples to apples comparison. Yes, the Acura has the Technology/Navigation package and the Infinity doesn't. You'd have to add at least the Navigation package, Premium package, spoiler and 18" wheels to get the Infinity G37 to match the Acura TL. The MSRPs are both in the same ball park when you consider it's difficult to equip the cars identically due to how the options are packaged. I find Infinity has a little more versitility when it comes to selecting option packages. Just goes to show you have to check for yourself that you're comparing apples to apples and understand what the equipment differences are so you can make a informed decision. |

Replying to: sam_k (Jul 08, 2009 7:18 am) TL 0-60 6s (Here its slower than a 328i with 230HP) 1/4 mile 14.8s G35x with 306HP (Have not seen the G37x times yet, which would be better) 0.60 5.4s 1/4 mile 14s I would not call this the same. It would be hard for me to get the TL over the 328i, interior, exterior, features are all subjective. I would pass on the 328i for the G37 though. Just my 2 cents. |
