For owners of cars with 200,000+ miles on it how often do you perform your oil change. 3,000 5,000 or 7,500? I've done a lot of research on it but not a definite answer. I know Consumer Reports did a study but it's flawed. They tested two NYC taxi cabs at 3000 and 5000 oil changes, pulled the engine apart at 100,00 miles, and found that both cars had the same engine wear. The flaw in this study is that the cars are basically running 24/7 without a cool down period. The arguments for a 3,000 oil change is a mechanic gets to also check out other parts of your car so if you have a serious problem it'll be discovered at 3,000 miles rather than later on where it become worse. Art's Automotive in Berkeley (they only work on Japanese cars) believes in 3,000 mile oil changes since none of the studies showed cars with over 200,000 miles tested at less frequent oil change intervals. I've been having my 1995 Civic EX changed at 5,000 miles. The manual states 7,500 for regular driving and 3,750 for extreme. My commute is 25 miles most of it highway so I personally do 5,000 miles to be on the safe side. |

my 97 Camry v6 has 235,000 miles. The recommended OCI was 10k (?), revised to 7.5 after the sludge issue became known, and I've always (purchased it with 15k on the odo) changed it between 4k-5k. It uses no oil, at least in terms of having to add any between changes. Plugs have been worn but were still very clean when replaced at 100k. I use 4k-5k on all my vehicles: 02 v6 Highlander (101k miles), 97 v6 Camry (235k miles). Since I usually do my own, this has worked for me for many years, and on cars I no longer own (like 93 i4 camry wrecked at 150k miles, and a 91 v6 camry wrecked at ~200k) My civic of course (07) has the maintenance minder, fyi, the average mileage between changes over the 37k miles on it now has been 6200 when the minder hits 15%. the reality is that 5k is a very easy number to remember if you don't have the maintenance minder feature. as far as finding other issues earlier, i find it a bit of a stretch if you are relying on someone else to find them for you. If you do your own changes, then yes, that adds value. |
