If one can excuse the Crown Vic & Grand Marquis, then I'd also excuse the Ranger.

These may be waaaaaaay long in the tooth, with monstrous panel gaps and cheap vinyl interior, but in basic 4cyl, RWD, stickshift form, they are one of "The Last Honest Vehicles": easy to work on, cheap to fix, debugged of glaring faults, 25mpg efficient & cheap to insure, and most like the venerable Model T than anything else on the market.

I adore the modern technology of direct injected turbos, AWD, 4WS, ESC, ABS, IRS, TCS, active steering, DSG, automatic sun visors, etc, etc, but want at least ONE vehicle I can fix with a crescent wrench and a jackknife

I hereby throw my vote for WORST car to the Smart, a car whose only real attribute is parkability, even though the clueless target market is people who think they're buying a high-MPG Polar Bear saver that they can self-righteously flaunt at the local food co-op.

The Smart may have a "safety cell", but without a crumple zone, passengers may face the same fate as Dale Earnhardt Sr in a big crash.

Well I can agree on the smart for not delivering on the promise. But it is hard to get away from the Suzuki Reno for poor sales, and poor dependability and poor looks.

So the Smart gets it by consensus? Even my wife thought it was a silly concept. I believe I can carry more groceries in my bike trailer than you can with a smart. And despite what Nippon says, it would take more than shoulder room to get him to buy one. He will however defend the small underdog to the end. He defended the Prius with full enthusiasm and ended up buying three new cars after the Prius came out, not one was a Prius.

I don't know if the Smart is the consensus. It should get bonus points for the fact that it's no great shakes on mileage given its microscopic size. The European and and Canadian models are different. To Americanize it you had to beat out all the desirable traits.

I have to admit you have a really good (?) candidate with that Reno. Maybe Suzuki should be named Worst Automaker of the Year.

That's the beauty of your CarSpace blog... you could dedicate your blog to homing in on the worst automaker if it tickled your fancy

Now now boaz, don't pick a fight with me!

The Prius is very good for what it was designed for, pulling people out of their 6-cylinder sedans and 8-cylinder trucks and into a 50 mpg vehicle, as well as giving people the opportunity to make a green statement with their car purchase.

It's the worst driver's car ever created, and that is coming from the owner of an ECHO for goodness' sake!

But then, you and I both know that 98% of the car owners in America aren't car DRIVERS, they are car OPERATORS, and they wouldn't know or care about the difference between a good drive and a bad one. They are A to B, strictly A to B.

And you also know me, the bottom line is no stick, no sale, and that's the only real problem with the Smart car. Of course, I haven't actually driven one you understand, just sat in it at the auto show. It sure is cute though.

It wasn't a fight my friend. It is a point about you defending the underdog. Cute isn't many would call the Smart. Functional maybe but you know simply offering an alternative to a bigger car isn't a qualification for "good" drivers car. In fact you defended the smart in one of the early forums when it was first released when I said something very close to this: It's the worst driver's car ever created, and that is coming from the owner of an ECHO for goodness' sake! I have been in a Smart and it fights you in the freeway rain groves almost like my old motorcycle. I am just pointing out that you will defend cars like the Smart and Prius even if they fall short in fulfilling their intended purpose. If small cars had a patron saint the medal would look a lot like you. Not a bad thing because that is just you.

We were nominating a car for worst car based on sales, and product quality, and meeting its promised specifications. You said: “The question is, what's a good city car/commute car that I can park anywhere, which will get superlative fuel economy, yet still have some style and optional features I can't typically find in the usual econoboxes?” The car you are now driving and the one that replaced it have more room and cost close to the same and gets at least if not better fuel mileage. So the Smart didn’t answer the question that anyone asked. No one said give me a micro car that gets the same mileage as a compact and has no room to even bring home the groceries. I simply agree the Smart was a good nomination for worst car of 2008 and knew that even if the Smart had a bit more room without a manual you weren't going to consider it.

And that is why the Smart keeps rearing its ugly head in here. It takes a special vehicle to do nothing well at all.
