What about the new Chevy Malibu. I think it is a whole lot better looking then the Accord or Camry. Most all the car magazines agree with me on that. Switch over to GM, they need you.

Actually, I do like the Malibu overall. There are some minor details that I'm not too crazy about, but could live with. For instance, something about the nose of the car just looks swollen to me, but then so does the Camry. And the rear of the Malibu just seems a bit unfinished, somehow. Not hideous, but just a bit awkward. While I would consider a Malibu, I think I'd probably choose a Saturn Aura instead. Same basic package, but just more attractive IMO.

Another car in this class that I want to like, but it irritates me that they don't put more effort into the base model, is the Ford Fusion. I like the style of them, and think it's a nice, space-efficient package. Not too big on the outside, but big enough on the inside for my tastes. But with the 4-cyl, you get mediocre fuel economy and performance that's pretty lame by today's standards. That's probably not enough to nominate it for 2008's worst, but it still irritates me.

I like the xB and the Element and the Prius has grown on me. Looks are just so subjective - lots of people liked the looks of the Aztec enough to buy them. Maybe it looks better sitting inside it.

Paint the cladding and you could even convince me to drive a Baja around for the right price. Its saving grace is that it can't be a nominee for the '08 awards.

The Aveo still reeks and is essentially a rebadged Daewoo. It's truly awful. Granted the Suzuki Reno is also a bad car and also a Daewoo.
The FJ Cruiser has poor visibility that's a fact but it's not really ugly and it's extremely reliable. Poor sales due to low fuel economy. I don't think the Dodges are all that ugly either. Some less than others, but overall not horrible. The Aveo is a real competitor to the Yugo and is about as reliable. It's ugly, unreliable, uncomfortable and gets poor fuel economy.
I would give a Nod also to the Suzuki Reno as another piece of rebadged crap.
Why can't Suzuki bring the Swift Sport to the US?
Besides a Truck isn't a car and most trucks look Butch, and most look like trucks.
The SmartCar is also another ugly car and I like hatchbacks! I hate VW's because of poor reliability but I like the look of the Golf and the new Jetta Sportwagen.
The Smart Car is a waste of money but some people like the look, it's retro-futuristic. All it needs is Woody Allen to make it complete.
Aveo = Total Crap Yugo Wannabe

"worst car" honors can't be based ONLY on looks. It has to be the worst package overall... nippononly

Well you can bet that anything built by GM will be falling apart shortly after the warranty expires if not before.

"Well you can bet that anything built by GM will be falling apart shortly after the warranty expires if not before."

And there is the beauty of nominating the Reno. You don't have to wait till the warrentee for it to fall apart. From the dependability studies you can watch it fall apart right before your eyes. Maybe even faster than a VW? Well maybe not that fast but pretty quick. Faster than a Kia Reo? Well even they are rated better than a Reno.

But I still say darn the luck the Subaru Baja is gone. It was an easy pick. But then the Scions aren't pretty and they aren't Toyota dependable so there is still hope.

I think I already mentioned that I like Scions and my wife would buy an xD tomorrow.

I haven't looked at JD Power but guess who tops the chart of the CR Predicted Reliability Rankings for '09 models?

JD powers has Scions below average. But CR has rated 2009 cars before 2009? I am sure they don't rate the Reno at the top of their list. Sounds like them rate the car first and then see how they hold up. But I have never hid my dislike of the xB. I wouldn't ride in one to a dog fight let alone drive one to a dog fight. Any car designed by etch a sketch just goes against the grain. They even managed to make it less desirable to the target demographic with the redesign. But I know people who like them, they were the same ones that bought a Aztec when they first came out I am sure. The xD neither offends me nor excites me. Lots of other cars in their class that do what they are supposed to do with better fuel economy. Still a 16 month sales slump for Scion has to indicate something no matter what CR thinks. And the person doing the article was interesting saying that dependability doesn't stop him or her from buying a car they like. I had to smirk. I can be the same way if I like a car but I just can't get passed dependability and ugly. But the question was worst car of 2008. Scion has plenty of time to drop in a year.

What can I say? I like boxes and minivans. The only thing the xB (and the Flex) needs are sliding doors.

My Top (Bottom?) 5 by uofmg35

I can't pick one, so I'll try 5:

- Dodge Nitro
- Mini Clubman (aren't Mini's supposed to be... mini?)
- Hummer anything (like John Madden, this brand justs need to retire)
- Chrysler Aspen
- Acura TL

Not sure if this was limited to only all new 2009 models. If so, my vote is for the TL. Besides the horrible styling, it's now also overweight and overpriced. Nice job Acura. Maybe if you add more buttons to the dash your problems will be solved...

OK....I'll jump in....top 5 (bad) vehicles

-Hummer.....anything. Looked ridiculous when they came out. Look even more ridiculous now. Go so far to say that when people put custom "wheels" on them, the even look hideous.

-Scion XB....for the same price as a well equipped corolla, you get s silly looking "wagon" that sounds course and looks even worse than a vanilla Corolla. The original was "unique". This one looks like the designers dropped an ink blot on the floor and decided to put it into their CAD system as a design.

-Smart Car....looks foolish, drives terrible, takes premium fuel, and my lawnmower has less noise, vibration and harshness than the Smart. Every time I see one, I keep expecting a Shriner to exit from it.

-Escalade ESV pickup. If you're going to go over the top with a design, go all the way. This one looks like the crusher missed the entire front end, and only chopped off the back end....then put an MSRP sticker on it and shipped it to the dealership.

-Mitsubish EVO. I know that this car has a lot of dynamic "goodness". But, how much "boy racer" can you possibly put into a car before it becomes as esthetic joke? The answer....EVO.

Just a quick note about the '09 TL. I know I'm in the minority, but I like the redesign. You put the new one, side-by-side to the previous gen, and the old one looks ancient, by comparison. Any car that pulls .83g on the skid pad. And, goes 0-60 in under 7 secs, is hardly overweight, at least not for the amount of power it has. Got to drive one at the formal "unveiling" at my local dealership. Being the former owner of an '04 TL, everything about the new one is better, across the board.

Now, I understand that the leftover '08s are being steeply discounted. And, for the money they're currently selling at, they are a bargain. That makes the difference in real world price fairly significant between the old and the new. But, the '09s are starting to be discounted, too. This time next year, the price between the new gen and previous gen will shrink as the discounting should become more aggressive. It would be hard not to seriously consider an '09 if those discounts get generous.
