Perhaps the next generation, if there is to be one, will be based off of a Lada or a Trabant.

I don't know whether anyone is marketing a truly unacceptable car in the US anymore. There are indeed some that maybe I'd rather not be seen in and some whose price is nutty for what you get but the overall quality of cars is as good as it likely ever has been.

But the target is always moving, right? So even though the worst car of 2008 might have been a DREAM model in 1988, it is still the worst this year.

Is the Ranger still available as an '08? If so, that can join my list. 20 year old platform mated to 15 year old engines (with the exception of the Mazda 2.3), and they don't still offer it with the "Vulcan" V-6 do they? They should be ashamed if so.

Good point about the moving target.

I also think that overall there is more a movement to the middle, which is to say that while there aren't many truly awful cars there also aren't many to lust for.

I couldn't agree more.

Maybe the Dodge Journey, the cost-cuttingest, least distinguished, and newest of all of them? But I can't remember if that's an '08 or '09.

I have to admit I actually liked the Journey when it first came out. I thought it was an attractive looking rig. But it just seemed to get stale really fast.

And cars like the Sebring and Avenger are almost enough to make me deny that I was ever a Chrysler fan.

that none of the true quirky cars like an Aztec (I actually thought it was a good idea gone bad) or an X-90 are being made anymore.

I would say the bad cars are the dinosaurs that refuse to change like Rangers and Trailblazers. You get bad just because the completion has moved forward.

The worst new car would be the Sebring and Avenger. So little effort was put in to these that Chrysler deserves the sales numbers they are getting with them.

Looks like the Sebring might be the early leader.

Worst might also include something that was just a less than stellar idea rather than a real clunker too. Grist for the mill

why did the Pacifica get the pick for 2007? I know it was no great shakes, but I kinda liked them, especially once they started putting 4.0 V-6es in them.

the Suzuki Reno and Forenza to the running: the last of the pre-Y2K old school Daewoos, still being sold years later with the Szuki badge on them. Awful reliability (dragging down Suzuki's company-wide ratings), awful resale, junky to drive (rented one this year when the rental place had nothing else left), and if all you wanted was a cheap car, you could have got a lower price at Hyundai, Nissan or Ford, all of which made a better compact car.

Oh, and the '08 Mitsubishi Raider? Now there was a great idea......NOT! LOL

Oh, those are good choices. You wouldn't know looking at them what junk they are underneath the surface.

guss - Yeah, that's some of where I've be coming from. There aren't any Azteks out there in the market. People will say the Element is ugly but it's not even in the Aztek's league. Once GM brought Lutz on board their tolerance for hideous appliances took a nosedive.
