Car Stock Exchange to end by mikedrud

Here's the scoop on our plans for CSX going forward:

We have decided to end the Edmunds' Inside Line Car Stock Exchange Monthly Contest ("Contest") effective December 31, 2008 and the final Contest Entry Period will begin at 12:01 a.m. PT on December 1, 2008 and end at 11:59 p.m. PT on December 31, 2008. In addition, Car Stock Exchange ("CSX") will end (and be removed from the Inside Line website) mid-January after we determine the winner of Contest for December.

We have enjoyed running CSX for the last 10 months, and we appreciate everyone who participated and gave us their thoughtful feedback on the game.

If you have any comments, please post them here.

Best,

Mike

We will IPO two more vehicles 11/18/08 and that will be that for new vehicle stocks in the game.

Wow!

That was a bit sudden. It was a great game is spite of some of the issues, and I hope that it comes back in some form. Is there an email address, or other non-public way to contact you, Mike? I had some things (not directly related to game play) that I would like to discuss with you.

What is the plan for the stocks at the end of December? Will they retire? If so, what will the value be based on? Besides the Durango hybrid, what other stocks were scheduled for retirement in Dec?

ouch.. It is a short notice, but understandable.

I know CSX was a Beta version, would there be a full version launch in near future? Or has downturn in economy also caught up with Edmunds? Anyways, I enjoyed the game a lot, including nice prizes, and forum conversations. I wish everyone best luck for November and December prizes and happy holidays.

Let me address what questions I can at this time:

1. We may bring CSX back. We were actually working on a version 2.0, and that might still materialize; but for now, we'll end this "test run" and then when appropriate, revisit the possibility of bringing the game back.

2. December will work like any other month. We will correct the stock prices at the beginning of January and then adjust holdings based on unit sales numbers. The game will actually remain on the site through mid-January so that we can accomplish this. There will only be prizes this month and next month, not for January. We will halt trading after December 31, but you guys can still visit the site to check for status updates with respect to December standings, etc.

3. I will confirm which stocks retire at the end of December in the next week or so. I have to confirm on sale dates.

As I have more details, I will update this discussion thread.

Mike, can you, please, give us a reason for ending it?
Also, out of curiousity, was it a good predictor of the actual car sales?
Thanks!

I too will miss the game and the people. Although, with bg96 in the game I knew I'd never hold the top spot. Now I'm gonna have to find another daily virtual distraction. I guess if any of us wealthier folk want a shot at December, there's gonna be some massive wealth dumping.

d_hyper: we're ending it, because we felt like we couldn't continue with the game as is into perpetuity. It needs changes/enhancements to keep things interesting and to address some of the gameplay and technical issues players have brought to our attention.

We are still looking at those ideas for the future, but with the marketplace where it is at, it doesn't make sense for us to throw a lot of resources at this game. It's been fun and an interesting learning experience for all, and I will miss it too, but we have to move on (for now).

A good predictor of actual car sales? That's the $64,000 question, isn't it? A lot of people follow our monthly stats and industry reports through Automotive News (an industry publication). We tried to build a prediction model that could help in this regard, and it needs tweaks. It's a difficult thing to do.

My personal feeling is that if you know general opinion of the overall players/buyers, you'll get a sense for the direction of auto purchases, but there's nothing exact out there that can truly predict sales.
