#67 of 84 2008 XC70 Weak Acceleration / Erratic Shifting
Nov 30, 2011 (11:58 am)
I just bought a certified pre-owned 2008 XC70 with 45k with the 6 cyl. engine (no turbo), and I've had serious issues with the lack of power on acceleration and erratic shifting. Wasn't like this when i bought it, but with 3500 miles in the car, I have issues. This is my fourth xc70. I currently also own a 2005 which is a rocket. Traded in an '03 for this '08 and the '03 was also a rocket. Never a problem with acceleration. Both the dealer I bought it from and the one nearer me in VT (now) tell me this is a common complaint for the '08 V6 but technically there's nothing wrong with the car. BS!! The car not only is weak off the mark, it upshifts too quickly and often downshifts and upshifts quickly (jerking back and forth), clutch often engaging for too long while shifting so the engine revs high with no power. And in VT, I'm always climbing hills -- the transmission sounds like it's cutting wood with a chainsaw, straining to get up hills. This is a AWD car marketed as a mountain car!! My past xc70's have been tanks, going anywhere I want them too, and with no hesitation. This car has no power, a total wimp.
Anyone have the same issues? Solutions? Effective recourse? I've been sold a Ford Focus in Volvo XC70 clothing!
#68 of 84 2002 Volvo XC70

I am sickened to learn that so many people have transmission problems with the 2002 XC70. I am trying to sell mine. Only 86,000 miles. After reading the posts I fear my Volvo will end up in a salvage yard. My Volvo has a bad transmission. I was hoping to sell it for a very reasonable price and someone would fix the transmission and have a great car.

I am posting 68. I live in Montana and you described the sound perfectly - cutting wood with a chainsaw while climbing in elevation. I had that issue since the day I bought my XC70. After a few years I couldn't travel over the mountains unless I took coolant along cause it would always deplete itself. My Volvo dealership could never find a problem. Now at 86,000 miles my transmission is bad.

#71 of 84 Not fair to Volvo owners!
Jan 02, 2012 (8:59 pm)
I OWN A 2002 VOLVO XC70 CROSS COUNTRY. WHILE DRIVING, AND ESPECIALLY DURING DOWN SHIFTS, THE VEHICLE WOULD LOSE ITS CONNECTION TO THE DRIVE SHAFT, CAUSING THE ENGINE TO REV UP AND THE VEHICLE TO JERK AS IT GRABBED BACK INTO GEAR. THE JERKING HAS CONSEQUENTLY CAUSED ME TO BREAK MY MOTOR MOUNTS. A LOCAL MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION. THE DEALER AGREED THAT THIS WAS THE ONLY SOLUTION. ALL SOFTWARE UPDATES HAVE BEEN DONE. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT BEEN CONTACTED, AS THEY ARE A CHINESE COMPANY. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS AROUND 85,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 125,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. NOT FAIR TO THE OWNER. MANUFACTURER SHOULD CORRECT THIS COMMON, EXPENSIVE PROBLEM.
#72 of 84 2001 Volvo XC Transmission Problem 97,000 miles
Jan 05, 2012 (1:28 pm)
Have the same issue as many of the people on this forum post. 2001 Volvo XC with serious transmission problems. Slow to engage, slipping, and dashboard lights on. Taken it into 2 transmission experts. 1 said that a firmware adjustment (at $1000) might take care of the issue but didn't recommend it. Recommended a $4000 transmission replacement. The other shop just recommended a replacement - $3400 for the transmission and $800 in labor. Given the car is work <$8000, it's a bad decision to have to make. If anyone is pursuing any action around this, let me know sales(at)frommworldwide.com
#73 of 84 Potential fix
Jan 07, 2012 (6:25 am)
Our volvo (2002 XC) was doing the same thing and I had the transmission fluid changed twice using the recommended gravity only drain and refill at the pricetag of something like $300.00 each time. Both times there was no improvement that was noticeable. I kept bugging the dealership and they said maybe I needed a new tranny as many of you have said. Then one day that I called them they said they had a "new" machine that flushed the transmission fluid completely and refilled it and that they could try that. I tried to get them to do it for free to no avail but had them try it anyway. I figured I had already dumped several hundred dollars in it without flushing so I may as welll try flushing it. I did, for another charge, and it has worked (up to now). So far so good. The mechanic thought the tranny was too far gone to salvage, but I said try it anyway. So my suggestion is that you broach the issue of flush and fill and give that a try. Apparently Volvo said for the longest that this would dislodge sludge and grime in the bottom of the pan at first, but this "new" machine is designed to take care of this. I don't know if this is a proprietary machine for Volvo (as so many of mechanics tools are these days - Oh I long for carbuerators and mechanical parts that I can actually work on myself!) but I would certainly give it a try. If you have to spend $4000 on a new tranny, why not try a couple hundred to see if it will work? Best of luck to you all.
#74 of 84 AW55-50 or AW55-51 interchangeable??
Mar 12, 2012 (5:33 am)
I just bought a 2002 Volvo V70 XC with transmission issues. Hard 1-2 shift and sometimes, it "locks" itself in 3rd gear and flashes a message on the screen. I can clear the code with my scanner and it will be OK for a day or sometimes 2-3 weeks. Is this common with these transmissions? Could it be a computer issue and not a bad transmission?
I found a good AW55-51 transmission. Can I replace the AW55-50 with the AW55-51?
Has anyone had any luck rebuilding these transmission themselves?
Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this for me. This is my first Volvo so I'm a newbie to their issues.
#75 of 84 2004 XC 70 Transmission clunking
Mar 15, 2012 (6:02 pm)
Our 2004 XC70 "clunks" while downshifting between 2nd and 1st. It is very disappointing news. The car has 143,000 miles. Dealer estimates about $5K to replace with new transmission. Has anyone had any experience with 3rd party transmission service vendors?

I had great luck with a 3rd party. Still expensive but paid $3,150.00. Got 3 year warranty. They work with a volvo repair shop to get the software "reflash" for the transmission. But you really have to make sure they have worked on Volvos. and have a relationship with a volvo repair shop. I've heard terrible stories about inexperienced big chains.
