2005 impala 3.4 heat hand going up and down

My coolant temp hand go's up and down while driving at operating temps. Not a lot maybe a quarter inch or so. So far it is isnt loosing any coolant. this just started, and the hand is quiet a bit further in the hot direction than usual.It's at halfway now, and all summer it never went there. Could this be air in the system? what is the procedeure for bleeding the cooling system? or could this possibly be the thermostat? or is it possible that it could be a bad sensor? I called a mechanic and talked to him on the phone and he said it sounded like air in the systen, or a intake leak??? thanks, for any help
