That 2004 GTI price is high. A 2004 GTI with 6 cyl should not be much more than $11K.
 
You could probably get a 2006 (new model version) for $16.5.
 
Anyway, you could compare the prices for all your potential purchases using the Edmunds True Cost to own calculator.
 
They are all likely going to be within $900, if you are selling after a year of ownership and buying at the Edmunds "Total Cash" price.
 
2007 GTI 2dr MT, estimated one year cost is $8792.
2006 GTI 2dr MT, ", $8,679
2009 new Rabbit, 2dr MT, $8069
2004 GTI 2dr MT, $7930
 
If it were me, I'd go for a 2004 Golf 2dr GL-- that one will be considerably cheaper, estimated one year ownership cost is $6499, and will probably be in the ballpark for just as much fun to drive.

Go for the Golf 20xx, Unless you are like me and like the Bling that comes with the GTI.
