I haven't had a car for a while (city living), and I now need to buy one. I'll be driving about 300 miles a week. I want a VW, I think German engineering the way to go. My question is, do I buy a new Rabbit or a used GTI. My budget is about $15k, I'd be taking a loan and can justify about $500 a month in payments. I don't want the loan to be longer than 36 months. Things to consider: - I might have to give up the car in a year. Buying new there is risk that I'll owe more than I can sell it for in a year because of depreciation. - I want a dependable car that I can get serviced under a warranty anywhere on the northeastern corridor, not just at the dealer where I bought it - I'll be doing lots of driving, sporty and fun to drive is important. I found a certified pre "loved" 2004 GTI with 36k miles on it for $16.5k. Is this a better idea than buying a new Rabbit for $16.5k? Thanks!

Replying to: geddes (Nov 07, 2008 11:28 am) You could probably get a 2006 (new model version) for $16.5. Anyway, you could compare the prices for all your potential purchases using the Edmunds True Cost to own calculator. They are all likely going to be within $900, if you are selling after a year of ownership and buying at the Edmunds "Total Cash" price. 2007 GTI 2dr MT, estimated one year cost is $8792. 2006 GTI 2dr MT, ", $8,679 2009 new Rabbit, 2dr MT, $8069 2004 GTI 2dr MT, $7930 If it were me, I'd go for a 2004 Golf 2dr GL-- that one will be considerably cheaper, estimated one year ownership cost is $6499, and will probably be in the ballpark for just as much fun to drive. |

Go for the Golf 20xx, Unless you are like me and like the Bling that comes with the GTI. |
