I am being offered a Venza with 3000 miles on it for the same price of a new one $31,500. The most they would take off of the price is 300....10 cents a mile! Does this sound like a good deal? New Orleans, LA

I put a deposit on a new Venza but lo and behold when the car was set for delivery I was notified that it had 3,000 miles on it and they would only go down $300 for the demo that I was set to buy. Does that sound fair to you?

The current Federal Tax deduction on milage is $.50 per mile.
I would accept nothing LESS than that deduction FROM the best price you had negotiated for a NEW version.
I would offer $2000 less than your negotiated price as you are offering to buy, in effect, a USED Venza, albeit, slightly so.
Also, keep in mind that I'll bet that this auto was not properly "broken in" if it was a demo, with lotso "lets see what'll do" on many freeway on-ramps...
Cautious is how I would proceed.

The tax deduction is supposed to encompass all costs of driving the car.. Depreciation, finance, fuel, insurance, maintenance, etc.. If that is the discount you want for demo mileage, then you might as well give it up, as that will never happen..
 
Heck... if that were the case, I'd look for a demo with 50K miles... At $0.50 per mile, I'd get the car for free!
 
When you lease a car, the penalty for going over your mileage allowance is usually $0.15-$0.20 per mile... You'll do well to get that. If that isn't enough, then a demo probably isn't for you. (It usually doesn't work for me, either.. )

Rather than worrying about the deduction rate of mileage, I would be way more concerned that you put a deposit down on what should be a new vehicle. Isn't that the real issue here?
 
Or is your dealer trying to offer you a lower-cost alternative to the new Venza that you were going to purchase? In that case, it's totally up to you to decide what's fair. Imagine you were trading in a Venza with 3,000 miles -- I can guarantee that the dealer would consider it a used vehicle with much more than $300 worth of depreciation.

Two different cars and there is a difference in their options. Let me know which you think is the better deal. Color (Black), 4 cyl., FWD.
 
Option A- Has tan cloth seats that are going to have leather put on them after market. The car has the comfort and covenience package. I believe with this option, because the leather is after market the front passenger seat is not power or heated. MSRP is 28,944, leather, taxes, title, doc fee, processing take price to 30343. Offered to us out the door at 28000.
 
Option B- Same vehicle except leather comes with this so passenger seat is power and heated. MSRP is 30039. Dealer claimed to give invoice pricing of 27318, then add doc fee of 250 title 25.50 and tax of 2136.52 giving an OTD price of 29730.02.
 
Are these good deals? Which one would you pick? We negotiated with A pretty heavily. B we didn't really negotiate too much with. Any help would be appreciated.

I see demos and rentals as hard miles and would never buy one. On demos the discount has never been high enough to reel me in. The dealers always have this absurd notion that the car is almost the same as new. You are correct that if the shoe was on the other foot and you were trading in a 3K mile car the dealer would low ball you as having a used car, yet it would be a more desirable car imo than a demo.
 
I recently looked at brand new (10 miles) left over 2008 loaded Avalon in the showroom where the dealer wanted the same money for it as a new 2009. They claim they simply can't sell it for under invoice. Their strategy has been (and remains) to wait for some sucker and uninformed buyer. I said it should be selling for at least 10% under what a comparable 2009 would sell for. They laughed.

I am not in the car sales business (thank God for small favors..lol), but I can appreciate what the dealers are doing (I don't like it either and will never buy a leftover car). You must realize that the car is owned by the dealer and if it does not sell he "eats" it....In my opinion knowing or having an idea on how the dealers operate will give us consumers an advantage. And what I mean by this is that if we are well informed we will be able to identify a good deal or better yet a fair deal, we will be able to recognize it and don't pass it up thinking that we can do better somewhere else.
The dealers, from what I expirienced, as well as other buyers, the dealers buy your car for wholesale price and resell it as a retail price, thus the profit and this profit will be as much as they can get based on many factors as we all know.
My advise, stay away from demos since those vehicles will be an unknown and the savings are minimal at best.You will be buying a used car.
