Locking Gas Cap Allowed? by fscoles

We recently purchased a used '08 LS Uplander. After fishing out the GM E85 (FlexFuel) Cap's tether line, I installed the recommended (by Stant tech services & parts store) #10511 locking cap, because several years ago someone had siphoned gas from our previous vehicle. I realize that the '08 GM's are tougher to siphon from, but still very easy for anyone to drop in sugar water or whatever into the tank. Earlier this week, while our local Chevy dealer was attending to a few minor warranty repairs, the service manager asked me to re-install the original (non-locking) gas cap, because any future related problems possibly caused by this aftermarket cap (it would be their decision, not mine) would not be covered by GM; and that they have the right to void the Uplander's warranties if I don't comply with their request. GM does not offer a locking cap; and the flap does not lock; so where does this leave me?? The Stant cap comes with their 12 month warranty; but that's meaningless if I were to lose my entire vehicle warranties over this. Common sense, I think, should be for every new vehicle to have at least either a locking flap or locking cap; but not on the '08 Uplanders according to GM??

If you still have the factory cap I would just keep it in the glove box and remember to switch out the locking gas cap when you take it in to the dealer.

Thanks for the advice. I'm keeping the original cap with the vehicle. We've now driven about 2,000 miles with the Stant locking cap installed with no problem; but it may trip an error message later on. The Stant has a 12mo replacement or refund warranty.

Have now gone 6,000 miles with the Stant locking gas cap installed with no problem, other than making sure the lock has some de-icer in its tumbers thru winter months, otherwise have to use a heat gun to get the cap off on cold mornings (not pleasant). I keep the original cap in the emergency tool kit for when needed.
