Rattling head restraints in 04 Malibu by beedublu

This is driving me nuts -- there is a rattle coming from the front passenger's head restraint when the seat is unoccupied. I've tried to put the restraint in different positions, to no avail. I even thought I'd try removing it and swapping it with the driver's side as a solution but I can't get the thing to come out. Anyone else with this problem and a suggestion how to fix it?

I have an 06 Malibu. The HR should work the same. You have two plastic rings into which the metal posts are inserted. One of the rings has a button on the outside edge that you push in to lower the headrest. The other ring also has a similar button on the inside edge, but the button does not stick out. It is flush with the side of the ring. If you raise the headrest all the way then push in on the flush button, you can pull the HR out of the seat. If you don't see the flush button on the other ring it may have a tiny pin hole on the inside edge. Bend a large paper clip and push it into the hole while pulling up on HR.

Good Luck.

I remember having rattles in my '04 Maxx front head rests. The problem was the plastic liners were not well secured in the metal tube holders, so they rattled against the metal constantly. My fix was to glue the plastic liners to the surrounding metal tube holders (__not__ the headrest shafts - those need to be able to move up and down) , at which point the headrest rattles stopped.

Also, Maxxes can have rattles in the dome light, which is held to the roof by a magnet poorly attached to the light body. Properly Gluing the magnet to the light assembly will stop that rattle.
