2009 Toyota Prius Follow-Up Test - Bottom Line: Five years on, the Toyota Prius is as fuel-efficient and practical as it has ever been. And if it matters, we still don't think it drives very well. (more)

Car reviews like this leave me scratching my head. I'd have to throw a boat anchor out to get 45 MPG. I average 51 MPG and other Prius drivers laugh at how low that is. As for performance, it's way better than any car I've driven before. I need 4 doors and a hatch, so small wagons were my rides in the past. The Prius is like a spaceship compared to them, especially cruising on the interstate at high speed. Around here 75mph is good enough for me, it better be because if you try 85mph you'll meet a friendly representative of the NC Highway Patrol. I think that auto reviewers, like GM, are dinosaurs. We're not all interested in driving on a drag strip. It's 2008 you know, not 1978.

People who work for car review magazines and websites are naturally enthusiasts. They typically pick the car in the comparisons that is the most sporty and fun to drive. This is who they are. As an auto enthusiast, I really enjoy reading these articles, but as a pragmatist I'm looking for a vehicle much more practical for a family of four than a GT-R or a Cayman. I like the Prius, and am interested in seeing the new generation in person when it arrives, but I also like to drive. To me, something like a Mini Clubman or a Fit would be a good compromise between fun and frugality. Driving something small and efficient would somewhat assuage the environmental impact of the project '56 Chevy Nomad with a corvette LS6 motor sitting in my garage |

Replying to: toyota4life (Dec 18, 2008 4:16 pm) The best I've ever done is 65 mpg on a 50 mi Sunday jaunt up the Outer Banks of NC at 25-35 mph. It was in perfect weather with little or no traffic. Otherwise 45-53 mpg is the norm for most tankfuls. |
