2003 driver's side sliding door/fuel door

The fuel door is directly behind the driver's side sliding door, and it obviously has a catch that prevents the sliding door from opening if the fuel door is open. Only problem is that even if the fuel door is closed, the sliding door will only open 10-12". Has anyone else had this problem? Is it something I can fix myself?
