Interesting question, thanks for posting. My S is also leased so any feed back will be intersting to read.

Interesting question. I've never leased, so I'm no fountain of knowledge of the subject.

I'd say you've got a good shot at it, though. Loans are increasingly hard to come by and all manufacturers are trying to terminate their lease business, so I'd say if you offer them a buyout (either in cash or funded from a bank), they'd be hard pressed to say no. They'd have a hard time selling a 6 year old car, anyway.

The age of the car might be an issue for the dealer. I imagine getting a loan for a car that is already 6 years old could only be financed for 3, maybe 4 years, tops? I also think the very nature of the car being a 2-seater convertible coupe is also in this guys favor. Not many people can get by with a 2-seater (let alone in this price range considering the Miata is cheaper which makes the S fill an even smaller market niche. Despite the S being 8+ years old body style, it still shows up on Edmunds most wanted list. That said, most wanted list isn't the most purchased list. Good luck!

I just tried to buyout my 05 s2000 and honda is not willing to negotiate, no matter what you say or try to threaten. They know they can put these on dealer lots and sell pretty easily. I ended up just buying it out as the residual was around 19k anyway.

It might be different for Honda, but I know that right now there might be a discount for people who want to buyout their GMAC Lease. I just bought my Yukon for less than I was originally quoted from my dealer at www.gmacleasebuyout.com - not sure if they're doing it for everyone though

I just had the same experience as tommy_gunn. My 06 s2000 lease ends in July and the residual is in the high $19k. My husband called Honda Financial a couple of weeks ago and they would not budge on the buyout. Our s2000 has only 11k miles on it.

glad to hear i was not the only one s2kgirl!

mine has 20,000 miles and is an 05, and they would not even listen to me trying to bargain, it was very cut and dry no.

to the prior guy stating his GMAC/Yukon was re-negotiated, well NO DUH! GMAC has hundreds of thousands of gas guzzlers on the lots around the US, and coming off lease, of course they want you to keep it! Big difference between that and a limited edition roadster that Honda can sell on their lot without much trouble...
