"Or is that only for preferred stock? "

Share holders of preferred stock are supposed to get more protection than holders of common stock. And bondholders are supposed to get the most protection of all. But Wall Street has all kinds of scams to run when the SHTF.

I didn't hear the full story on this, just caught a part of it, but some investors in Lehman Bros. who were SUPPOSED to be repaid via liquidation have been cut out of the picture, and have been re-classified as "unsecured creditors." In other words, they're SOL, just like the average stock holder.

Blogging ModBob keeps track of car stocks over on Alternate Route. He IM'd me saying that you could buy either a Ford Focus or 6,000 shares of Ford stock today.

So the question is - which would be the better investment?

Or which "investment" would depreciate faster?

Interesting

The Focus will depreciate. It is practically guaranteed that it will never reach zero. The car inevitably returns the benefit of its use.

The stock might depreciate or it might not, but all recent info indicates down. It might even go up in value. It could very well be worth zero at some point. The is no guaranteed return at all. There is the possibility of a very good return.

The car is the "safer" mover.

Maybe they could offer you a "stock package" where you purchase a car you can buy stock at a reduced price or get options

LOL - yeah, 1000 shares of common Ford stock with every purchase of a new Focus! 5000 shares for every purchase of an Expedition XL!

It's not a bad idea really. Get some free stock, enjoy following it, and if it starts paying you a dividend, then you may be more likely to support the company and recommend it to friends. There's probably some SEC rule against the practice.

Is GM at $4.93 hit the bottom yet? I could almost buy controlling interest in Ford $2.10. Well a couple thousand shares anyway.
