2009 Volkswagen Tiguan vs. 2008 Honda CR-V vs. 2008 Toyota RAV4 - So what's a utility-lovin' small family to do? Downsize. Full-size SUVs provide unmatched capability but their thirst may make you reassess your needs. Think compact utility vehicle. Think crossover. (more)

We get it already — fuel prices suck. And while we pity the poor sod who bought a new full-size SUV a few years ago and is now stuck with a fuel bill that has doubled and a vehicle whose residual value makes manure futures look appealing, everyone wants solutions. Sympathy won't heal a hemorrhaging wallet. 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan vs. 2008 Honda CR-V vs. 2008 Toyota RAV4 |

Where is the CX-7. I demand an explanation! It beat the RAV4 in the last comparison, so I would have expected the same. for 32K, you get more than the RAV4, including a better AWD system.

| The Subaru Forester is another omission. Top rated in Consumer Reports and it is available with the turbo engine! Come on Edmunds! | |
Why has this never (as far as I can remember) come into a direct comparo with the CR-V? Most RAV buyers choose the 4-cylinder and it would be interesting to see how a direct comparison would come out. I imagine *MOST* RAV buyers have a driving experience very similar to the CR-V in terms of performance. (It is true that the V6 is actually a pretty cheap option in the RAV...)

I agree...this was a weak comparison. The RAV4 should've been equipped with the four cylinder, and this should've included the CX-7 and ESPECIALLY the new Forester and Rogue. Why not compare the Tiguan to ALL of its rivals in its first comparo? Especially when the Forester is rated tops by Consumer Reports? Come on, Edmunds.

The 3 comparisons were helpful and informative, but where are the Rogue and the Forester? Perhaps in future a larger comparison can be done? Anyone remember Edmunds earlier remarks about their long term test V6 RAV4? Those echoed my RAV4 test drive; Its engine's powerful and thrifty, but the vehicle felt front heavy, wasn't all that responsive, and the interior (like the otherwise likeable '09 Forester XT I ended up with) was bargin basic. As for the CRV, decent ride, likeable interior, and little power from the engine (Honda reserves the turbo for its el-flinto riding Acura variant). |

The V6 option in the RAV as you note is very affordable with WAY more power with only a slight fuel penalty. Great marketing there by Toyota. |
