Guys - I thought a few of you were debating/recommending digital cameras a few months ago. Well I have done a little research and I think I am about to buy a Canon 50D, what do you think? The other option is the Nikon D90 but it seems as if the Canon is a bit more user friendly as this will be a present for my wife (EW?).

The 5D Mark II is a big leap, however, but would be an awesome camera for the very long haul, and also offers unsurpassed HD video capability. You will drool over the 5D Mark II, but it might be too much camera and money for your situation. If you see yourself taking pictures as well, I know you appreciate the better things in life... you should really consider it. Check out the specs... off the chart! There was a waiting list for it, so I'm not positive you'd have it in time for Christmas, if it's even been released yet. If you decide that's overkill... you can't make a mistake with either of your two selections. You have narrowed it down to the best at that price point. Check the Nikon interface yourself. If she can handle it, get the D90. Otherwise the Canon 50D is awesome, but no video clips. The D90's video could be very nice because they can be made through the high end lenses. Nice perk! Great Christmas gift! You are on target! TM |

But, if you like that video feature, the answer is obvious. link title This article is more technical and seems to favor the D90 (slightly) with some interesting measurements to back it up. link title And... this one is just a good spec comparison... both clearly have some advantages. Tough choice. (I think I prefer the Nikon D90 over the Canon 50D... but if it was for my wife, that could change things... it would be harder to decide.) link title Good luck! TM

The debate about great cameras seems very similar to our debates here about great cars. No one is really right or wrong, we just have varied opinions. |

Replying to: tagman (Dec 14, 2008 8:38 am) It's also worth mentioning that the D90 is about $400 cheaper - the price of a half decent lens or a top of the line flash. For the type of shooting I do, the Nikon system makes more sense. Canon simply does not have APS-C glass that can compare to my Nikkor 14-24 and 24-70 F2.8 lenses. For more typical shooting in the 24-150mm range, I could go either way. The 5D MkII is going to be absolutely awesome, but its also going to be at least 3 grand. If you can wait a bit longer Tag, Nikon is readying a replacement for the D300 called the D400 that will be packing a 14.8mp sensor, and will be able to capture 1080p HD video with stereo sound. It will likely cost under 2 grand. Gizmodo D400 preview

Replying to: lexusguy (Dec 14, 2008 12:31 pm) Well... I really have little choice but to wait anyway. So when I'm finally ready I'll see what's on the market. The upcoming D400 sounds great, especially at $1800. But the D90 is a great bargain, IMO. We'll see. That 50D Mark II is a great camera to consider as well, but pricey. I may need to get my wife a point-and-shoot this week. Apparently "something's happened" to her camera... whatever that means. I'll probably check out the latest point-and-shoot cameras from Canon. Replying to: tagman (Dec 14, 2008 3:48 pm) Canon SDs are always a safe choice. I would suggest either the 880 IS or the 790 IS though, you get nice big 3" screens with those.

Photozone is an invaluable tool for Nikon and Canon lenses, they've got pretty much all the majors. Sony and 4/3 format (Olympus/Panasonic) not so much. |
