The wind dam, located below the front bumper, on my '96 Aurora has been torn off twice. Does it serve an important purpose or can I just not replace it this time?

You may want to do a search on "overheating" and 'air dam" on this forum. Without the air dam, you may have serious overheating issues or, minimally, higher than normal operating temps. Since the 95-99s have no front fascia air openings, it is a critical part of the engine cooling system and is the only way to create fresh air flow over the radiator. I bolted mine on (left and right ends) and have avoided cement parking stops like the plague as the dam snaps off easily.

Thank you for your reply. I have not searched yet but what you say makes sense. I will have to try to find one somewhere. The last one was torn off when a truck in front of me on the interstate blew a tire and I was fortunate enough to have it slide under my Aurora.. Sounded as though the entire underside was destroyed but a thorough inspection found only the wind dam torn off and partially shredded. Thanks again for your answer.
