I can only guess, but it may be something to do with Throttle Position Sensor or related system. I think the transmission is just reacting to whats going on with engine. You may be able to get an ide by having it scanned at somewhere like autozone for codes on the SES light. I had the same trouble with high RPM's a couple times but in my case it seems to have gone away for now.

Appreciate the response. Last night while driving home I took my foot off the gas when I hit 40mph and it hit 50mph before I applied the break...NO CRUISE CONTROL on pretty level pavement. Just frustrating.
