For Any 2008 LaCrosse Owners. Old Guy Questions. by bobr14

Hello,

In my 70's now, and this will probably be my last car.

Sure is hard to make a decision.
Like the 2008/2009 LaCrosse, but-

I realize in these forums which are really just great, most posts are re problems. The number of folks who write in that they have no problems is probably way smaller than those who are annoyed enough to write.
So, the impressions one gets are "probably" a bit skewed.

My most important criteria is reliability.

Like the Toyota Avalon, but it sure is pricey.

Questions, please:

Would you buy another (2008) LaCrosse ?

Reliability ?

What don't you like ?

Are these transmission related problems I read here very prevalent or "meaningful" ? They do sound scary, and would hate to experience them.

Subjective of course, but do you think the Avalon is worth the few extra thousand ? Why ?

Any other thoughts or opinions would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
B.

We don't have a 2008 LaCrosse, but my wife and I bought a 2005. We are the original owners. It now has 19,000 miles. We both love the car, and it has never had any reliability issues. The 3.8 engine may be the most reliable engine in the world. We would buy another LaCrosse in a heartbeat. I think that the Avalon is overpriced, and I think that the seat bottoms are too short for an adult.
We have had no transmission issues with the LaCrosse. For what it is worth, we bought a 1998 Buick Regal new. It was also a 3.8 engine with the four speed automatic transmission. At 100,000 miles, the transmission started to shift very hard. I am told that they never leave you stranded, but eventually they lock up in third gear as a limp home mode before anything breaks. We replaced the transmission before it ever got in the limp home mode. Good luck!

That sounds like the transmission was in default mode due to a problem detected by the computer controlling the transmission. These are very durable and as you were told they drive you home unlike some of the foreign competition who might have been on their third transmission by 100,000 although replaced free by Honda! Most likely yours needed a pressure control module, which is a moderate price repair and it's better to wait and just service the transmission completely later.

There are millions of older 3800s with THM4-60 and THM4-65E transmissions in older H-bodies (leSabres, Park AVenues, Bonnevilles, Olds and the midsize versions) that are sought as used cars with 150,000 and more on them now that they are low-priced as used because of their durability of their motor and transmission.
